    questions about the cycling team

    Hello all,

I have recently been accepted into the master program in exercise phys. at Baylor. I raced as an undergrad at Rutgers and am trying to get some info about your club. I race on the road, tt, and cross and would like to jump back into the college circuit. I have kinda been warned that Baylor is super conservative religious. Would you guys say that the school is pretty accepting? I am no Gothic heathen, just your typical bike wrenching Irish beer drinker. I am just curious of the social life of the university any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Hehe, beer you say? Sounds like you should be a mountain biker

As far as Baylor being super conservative religious, I would be cautious in taking that seriously from someone who did not attend Baylor or who has not worked there. I won't shy from admitting that since we are a religiously affiliated university we are a bit more conservative than other institutions, but that is not always true for all departments, nor does it mean we only hire conservative Christian faculty. Heck, our Biology courses teach evolution and nothing but evolution.

Baylor is in the middle of a strong-winded push towards being a top-tier research institute, and in my opinion to be able to do that we can't be too picky with our recruiting. But then again I also think we already have great faculty. I do know a few of the faculty in HHPR and have a general feeling for that department, and I don't think you have to worry about butting heads with anyone there, and especially not in the biology/biochemistry departments.

As far as our race team goes.. well.. We are only a student organization, not even a club team. We have 20 some-odd members, only a handful of which are dedicated riders/members/racers. We don't have a coach, nor do I think we've ever had a coach? I'm not sure what you're used to at Rutgers. We're pretty competitive though, and can hold our own against the bigger schools (Texas A&S, Texas, MSU) who do have their own organized teams and coaches (A&M.. no coach, but huge team). You sound like you'd be a great asset in helping us grow and be more competitive, and even to give us a few training pointers - your curiosity is pretty encouraging already.

Or dance. Oh wait, they fixed that a few years back after 151 years of the ban.

    Thumbs up

Well thank you for the input. I am waiting to hear back about my funding status, but i will more than likely be joining you all in the late summer months on the road. The only reason I ask about the conservative nature of the university is that I am not a particularly religious person, however I consider myself a moderate conservative and sometimes that didn't exactly fit with such a liberal university as Rutgers. I just don't want to go from one extreme to the other. As far as beer type, German and Belgium all the way. Appreciate you all getting back to me, we had our first crit of the season today, some squirrelly guy decided he didn't want to race anymore and took me out with him (with 4 laps to go!!)....bummer. Helmet is destroyed, but all the bits and pieces are working. look forward to riding with you all in the future.

Lots of good housing "on" campus...it's a closed campus (ie no major roads run through it), so everything on the actual campus is going to be a dorm, or dorm-style community living. There's tons of apartments by the campus though, I live in one that's only .3 miles away.

Roommate might make it easier to transition to living in Waco, especially if it's one who has lived here already. My weight training teacher, a grad student, just moved here from OK and she's still getting used to the city....

bearcribs.com is an apt locater, but I can't vouch for how good it is. Brothers Management owns a lot of complexes close to campus, so I would check them out.
