I carry a small pepper spray in my Jersey on longer road rides. Just in case of some dong-licker like that.

I've often thought of carrying my S & W airweight in a chest rig.

    Angry

    Bad news from Ryan:

"my case against Mr. Abernathy was dismissed. The judge threw it out. This is a sad day for local cyclist. Justice is not served."

    Forget Pepper spray

Pepper spray will just piss someone off, and when they get mildly recovered, they can still go after you.
I ride alone a lot, but I always let my wife know where I'll be, my planned route, and what time to expect me back. If something comes up, I call. I think in this case, you did what you could. It's disturbing that you were disconnected from 911 twice. That maniac mofo could have killed you.
On a bike, we have no defense against a 2000 lb. car, much less, a 4000 lb dually truck that could smash us like a bug. Get a decent gun and learn how to shoot it. The S& W airweight is nice, but make sure you actually load the +P ammo, best with a frangible or hollow point bullet. Two shots to center mass will assure the fool won't be chasing you down in his truck.
That's pretty radical, and I would hope I would never be put in that situation, and hope you never are again. Short of that, always ride in a group, especially on longer rides. Pre-program the local number for the sherrif's department in your cell phone. Make sure someone knows where you'll be and when you'll be back.

god that is completely messed up! the guy definetely has anger issues. so sorry to have this happen to you and the judge dismissing the case. who knows how many other cyclists he has unfortunately threatened.

i hope you continue to ride
