    Fundraising

I was wondering how fundraising has been going for everyone. I have talked to numerous family members, coworkers, and mailed out 120 letters so far to other friends and family. I just want some feedback on how everyone else is doing, or some other strategies that people are using that are working well.

Hey... sounds like you're doing great. I haven't been in touch with many people over the break, but I did hear that one guy went out on a street corner in Houston with a sandwich board for an afternoon, until a cop came by and told him that he had to have a permit to do that.

I've personally been really busy and things are coming along pretty slowly for me. But, there's still hope.

roger that. i'm going to get alot of support from work hopefully. UPS is generally generous. Other then that, I want to send something to my hometown's newspaper, maybe drop by for an interview or something. News is small enough there, I figure they'd wet themselves if they found out a local was riding from austin to alaska. I dunno, three grand is alot, I just need more wawys to earn for safety. I know campus Sport Clubs can earn cash through clean-ups after football/basketball games, and also ushering, I think. Maybe we can do something similar.

Is there anything we can do to help fundraise, like show up and help out with events at the Erwin Center or something? I'm willing to donate alot of time to this, but I don't know how to go about volunteering for donations. Any ideas?

since we are a registered club i know we can help out with FEC cleanups. I don't know if most spots are already taken though. I can definetly look into it since my team is doing one this weekend, and i have the hookups.

Don't know if it will be that helpful though. It's $7 an hour and they usually limit it to about 40 people i think, and it lasts about 2-3 hours. But hey, it's more fundraising. I'll look into it.

hmm. just an idea. But what if we got all the local businesses around Austin that maybe didn't really want to give a big donation, but could donate something for like an auction. We could hold an auction. Have people buy raffle tickets for like $5 or something, i dunno, and get a chance to win like a free haircut, or a gift certificate to AMy's ice cream, or stuff like that.

does that seem possible? or way too much work?

my fundraising started off good, but died quickly. sent a large number of letters to businesses in Fredericksburg, but the reply was little. i might have to resort to the "homeless" thing.

hopefully we can pull some people together for the NORBA race and get some money from TMBRA/NORBA

nothing is too much work if you have dedicated people to help you, and know what to do.

I'm down for fighting a bum for a 183 corner too. i've got plenty of cardboard in the garage, and a pair of dirty shoes used for mowing the lawn. follow up with a pair of shorts/pants that's been at UPS with me, throw in my budweiser button-up, and I think I could pull it off. DAMMIT, I cut my hair though...

you were talking about volunteering for Nationals in Waco? I forgot that they were hosting Nat's this year. I'm in for going to watch some of the US's baddest MTBers carve some single track (of course help out too).

Like I said, I'm willing to invest the time if someone wants to.

Did you all ever find bikes or sponsorship. Are you still riding to Alaska? I saw something in the Daily Texan a while back. I mostly ride mountain bikes so that sounds like a looooong way to go.

Yep, the ride is still on.

This forum is kinda dead because we've mostly switched to a private messageboard that runs on our site. Not really a good thing to discuss stuff like fundraising in public - it wouldn't be in good taste.

Some of us still check this board, though, as you can see.

Cool. I was looking at Trek bikes at Freewheeling near Campus. They have some pretty sweet mountain bikes (and road from what I saw). Do you like your Trek?

Try a "silent auction". If you can get some good schwag donated, maybe you could hold an auction at an upcoming cycling event. That's one of the fundraising efforts the Rosedale Ride uses. Seems to be effective You could also try selling food and drink at cycling events, though I don't know what kind of permitting is required. Best wishes to y'all!
