    New Bike Trails in Smithville

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up that there are some new trails going in in Smithville at Buescher (Bih-Shur) State Park. We have been waiting for this for a long time. We actually started on the trails before the first of the year and built a mile and a half bypass that got rid of an ugly part of trail that is pipeline (it is now routed through the woods). If you are interested in coming out and helping build trails I am attaching the info from Cullen Sartor. Read below and contact him for additional info. I will also post this in VooDoo since this portion of the forum seems a little unused. Let me know if you have any questions. Not sure how to upload word documents here or if I even can, so email me if you want the waivers to sign and I will email them. kerrydphillips@gmail.com

I would like to announce a trail workday coming up on 2/16/13 at Buescher State Park from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. The work will consist of blazing new trail in the large scale trail upgrade that is going on at the park to make it a multi-use trail system to include mountain biking. The work is considered moderate and will involve bending, swinging, carrying and using hand tool, and possibly walking long distances. This workday is headed up by Vick Hines of the Central Texas Trail Tamers (www.trailtamers.org), along with help from Friends of the Lost Pines State Parks (http://friendsoflostpines.org/ ) and volunteers, such as yourselves.

Directions: Enter Buescher State Park through the main entrance and stop at the headquarters building. The headquarters opens at 8:00am on Saturday mornings. Inside you will receive a volunteer permit for your vehicle and directions to the Main Trailhead parking area. This is where we will meet for orientation before moving to the worksite.

    Wear: closed-toed shoes, long pants.

    Bring: work gloves, water, lunch.

All Volunteers: Please fill out and bring with you the attached volunteer waiver form. Bring it with you to the work day.

FOR YOUTH ONLY: If any members of your group are under the age of 18, please fill out and bring with you the attached parental release form. Remember, we are only accepting ages 14 and up for this activity.

If you are unable to make it, or your group size has decreased, please let me know.

To sign up or if you have any questions, please contact me at Cullen.sartor@tpwd.state.tx.us or give me a call at 512-332-6683.

Feel free to share with anyone you think might be interested. Hope to see you out there!

I decided not to post this in Voodoo so there would not be multiple versions out there.

Well, just got another email from Cullen, so here is the latest info, just to keep those interested informed.

    Hello everybody,

Things are progressing very well concerning the multi-use hike and mountain bike trails at Buescher State Park, so I wanted to provide an update. The trail work will be broken down into two categories: construction and maintenance. Trail construction will be taking place on coordinated work days in work groups, while trail maintenance can be done independently by individuals, on your own time.

On Monday, myself, Vick from Central Texas Trail Tamers, and Paul Uhl flagged out one of the new trail sections. This will be the starting point for the 2/16 trail workday. We are coming up with more work days for the spring and I will pass those along, once they have been decided upon. Thanks to all I have heard from regarding the 2/16 workday. If I haven’t heard from you and you or someone you know is interested, please let me know.

Another progression is that I have completed the “Trail Volunteer Manual.” This is a manual that I put together to guide maintenance volunteers on trail maintenance to make sure that park staff and volunteers are on the same page. Unlike trail construction, trail maintenance can be done by individuals or groups whenever you are available. Maintenance does not have to be done in coordination with a trail workday. Although we are building new trail, our current trail system can use some maintenance. This mainly consists of brushing along the trail and armoring low water crossings and eroded areas. Once the entire trail system is complete, maintenance will be an on-going need. Additionally, the Friends of the Lost Pines State Parks have donated trail tools for use while maintaining trails. There is some paperwork associated with the manual. So, on your first visit, please allow about 30 minutes for complete review of the material. After your first visit, it should be as simple as logging in and logging out. So, whenever you are ready, come on out to the park!

I thank you in advance for your work and dedication. Feel free to contact me with any questions, via phone or email. Also, please fill free to forward this on to interested parties.

    See ya out there,

    cullen
