KBR: Ding dong, the witch is dead! / There is a God.

New law will cap administrative fees associated with delinquent toll bills | KXAN.com

I got spanked for helping build trail at RPR by using 183A a few times then the bills came in plain envelopes from Delaware so I thought it was junk mail.
Had several hundred in admin fees. They dropped the total about 50% after some phone calls but I still paid about 50x the actual toll fees. (worth calling)

Now I'm elated that the lazy abortion stopping biyearly legislature was able to do something for the actual citizens of Texas and not just the ones w/ law degrees in Houston.

Suck it TXDOT we are free at last!!!!!!!!!!!!(Except that lady in the story, 41k is next level ostrich-ness.)

Anyways, If only I had some kind of container to place all my old bills in while I douse them with gasoline and Heisenberg that chit!

While I do agree that this is crappy, I call BS on the woman who knowingly drives a tollway every day to work, racks up big bills, HAS a tex tag ID account and somehow has not paid her bills.

I can see a case like yours where a one-off toll is missed, but not if she had a tag. I see the signs every day to and from work, I know it costs money. Which is why I rarely ever use it.

I had a rental car in Chicago not register correctly on a trip. Took them 6 months to hunt me down.

if I remember right the Final bill was like this-
    Tolls- $2.50
Admin fee for not having a tag- $5.00 ea- $10.
Not paying on 1st notice $25. per toll- $50.
by the time it found me it was over $300

How quickly the fees add up for a $2.50 toll charge.

The rental car company admitted fault and I didnt pay a dime but that was crazy.

And I am going to guess I know which toll booth. There is a singular booth to get onto 190 from 290. You can drive around Chicago all day avoiding tolls, but to get your car back to the rental car place you need that one last toll.

Nothing says america like paying for our roads twice. F*ck the toll companies and privatization of our infrastructure.

I had a similar Chicago experience driving there from Austin to Rockford and back picking up my hydraulic ironworker. The tooling was in Chicago. After about 12 toll booths(seriously) I ran out of change so I blew through some of the electronic lanes. As soon as I got back here I called to see what I owed. What followed was a classic who's-on-first routine compounded by the fact that you have to pay within 7 days PERIOD not even 7 work days.

"can you tell me what I owe so I don't have fines?"
"which booths did you go through?"
"I don't know, I don't know those roads you tell me."
"we can't tell you until your plates are in the system it takes 30days"
"how can I pay if I don't know how how much"
    "well we don't know either"
"if I wait to get in the system I wouldn't have paid within 7 days like it said"
"lets compare maps on our website"
"I drove here to here to here"
"looks like you only ran 3 booths and we allow 3 violations annually so you probably won't owe anything"

4 weeks later get a bill for $88!
"im calling you back because this is why I called trying to pay within one week of my visit"
"doesn't matter, you can pay or challenge but you will lose and now owe $168 if there is a pic of you plates"
"dude wtf are you still run by the mob!?" (short anwser =yes)

After some online research and reading Illinois Tollway Yelp page I was informed of tons of stories like this.
"my elderly parents were on a summer road trip and drove through in their RV. When they got back to Denver they had hundreds of dollars of toll bills because they didn't pay within 7 days"

I got so huffy I called the Rockford State Rep and explained I was there for business and is this "how they treat out-of-staters?".

Turns out that State Rep was introducing a bill which allows folks more than 7 days to pay the toll fees thus allowing travelers to get home and deal with it instead of paying on the road.
Luckily he was able to contact some higher ups at the toll commission and get the fee back to the original $6 in charges. Many thanks to him and his aide. I was lucky but for most people those fees/system is a total racket. Side note: Those highways were supposed to revert back to reg. hwys in the late 70's after the tolls covered the construction costs.

    Illinois.....Worse than Florida.

They somehow lost our cc info for autopay/recharge and ended up trying to tell us we stopped autopay. Therefore, we were charged non-tag fees for a month. That shit adds up. My wife turned the bitch mode on high and got all of the overages taken off but it took alot of phone time and several people/call backs, etc

I have two issues with how the tool roads are done

One is that late fees are so extreme. A late fee should not be more than the original charge of the toll.

Two is that trying to pay tolls is such a pain. I don't have a Txtag, so when I (very rarely) drive the toll road it has taken up to 45 days for any charge to appear on the website. I want to pay it as soon as possible to avoid the crazy late charges. If I waited for the letter in the mail, that often leaves just two weeks to pay it before fees are added in. With the website, in addition to entering in the license plate it requires you enter the start and end date you want to search for charges. Why can't I just say I want to see all charges for my license plate? I certainly don't want to miss paying for an older charge that is racking up late fees.

Only the government, not the people. Florida has a problem with both.

I called TXTAG to update my license plate - the online thing wasn't up to it - and encountered some drone of a woman who insisted I repeat all the information on my account: name, address, multiple vehicle plates, tag numbers, etc - in order to make sure it was really me. I asked if she thought I was calling to pay for someone else's license plate, and then I asked was she a Russian bot. She didn't see the irony, sadly.
