Allow me to expand on my 1Up.

    1) I purchased a single 1.25" with 2" adaptor rack from CL 2 years ago. It was used daily on the back of someone living the MTB/Vanlife before I got it. In 1 year of looking online for a used one it was 1 of 2 that I saw.
    2) It's stable, but would be more stable if it was the 2" version (no adapter)
    3) It's quick. Quick to install, quick to load, quick to unload, quick to remove.
    4) Even with it's age and use it still operates like a nearly new one. It has nearly no rubber/plastic and doesn't rely on straps or Velcro.
    5) If I wanted to, I could purchase and add on to expand the rack to 2 bikes.

If I did it all over again, I would probably buy new and get the 2" version.

Side Note: To be fair, I have the OG 1Up verision before the company went through it's turmoil. The current version from 1Up USA has some minor (but nice) improvements. The companies founder has started the quickrack/mach 2 company with a nearly identical but improved (self claimed) design. For more info and to avoid turning this thread into a what happened to 1up?" read this thread on MTBR, it seems to be the most complete story I found online of what happned: 1UP-USA.COM vs 1UPUSA.COM difference- Mtbr.com

After much deliberation, I ended up getting the top-of-the-line Kuat NV 2.0. It was hard passing up on the 1UP but I was really impressed with Kuat's customer service when I called with questions and don't like the fact that 1UP is a direct-only dealer. I ended up getting 10% off the Kuat list price with free shipping and no sales tax. I know that Seth will be telling me that I'll be sorry, but among the dozens of reviews I read on the Kuat NV 2.0 on Backcountry.com, virtually every one was 5 stars except for one person whose order got screwed up and another person who discovered his Chevy Colorado tailgate wouldn't drop down all the way with the rack reclined.

Anybody who wants a 10-yr old but fully functioning Yakima hanging-style hitch rack (1.25 or 2") with locking hitch pin - it's yours. I'll even throw in a couple of mounting adapters for $20.

We just got a brand new KŁat Sherpa about two hours ago. We rode Phil's World this morning with friends and had just settled down at the Wendy's in Cortez to eat some taco salad when I yelled, somebody just hit our bike rack! I could see the rack was kattywhomp and Mr. JB's bike was kind of knocked to one side. The driver of the '87 Camry was 17, had a driver's license for two weeks and she was struggling to drive a standard.

Anyway, we had her call her dad who showed up in about 5 minutes, he's a mountain biker and knows the mechanics at Kokopelli Bikes. It was decided we'd let Kokopelli check out both bikes, which amazingly got a clean bill of health -- no damage. The rack was obviously a loss, so we picked out the same rack, but in black, put it on the van, reloaded our bikes, and the new rack was charged to the girl's dad's CC.

We left the damaged rack for the dad, because I think a handy person (and he appeared to be one) might be able to get a replacement part or bend back the part that fits in the hitch, and have a completely functional, if slightly wonky, rack. No insurance, no police. It worked out fine, and small towns can be that way.

I'm running 2.35 IKONS and that is obviously the max size tire that will fit the Sherpa rack. KŁat has a new rack that will fit up to fat bikes -- it was less expensive and I liked it, but it was for a 2" hitch, which we don't have on our other two cars.

AND, one of the mechanics at Kokopelli was unwrapping an Ibis frame -- turquoise with accents, a Ripmo? -- I liketadied just looking at it. Gorgeous and lust worthy and the pic on the Ibis website just doesn't do it justice.

They also have Kokopelli branded ti frames, really beautiful.

My Kuat NV 2.0 looks so great I rarely even take it off my SUV. I do worry though that something like this will happen, with or without bikes in tow. Sounds like a good ending for you at least.

Someone once hit my car with a Hollywood rack and my hammerhead on it. Not real hard, but enough to bend the rack about 10 degrees to one side. No damage to the car or bike. As we were assessing the damage he said "boy, you're lucky the bike was not damaged."

I stared at him for about 10 seconds and then said, "no, YOU'RE lucky the bike is not damaged."

    He got the message.

Glad your Kuat got sorted out, must suck to have a rack issue on a trip.

It was a remarkably unsucky for what could have been an awful situation. Start to finish, including the taco salad to driving away from Kokopelli with a new hitch, was maybe an hour fifteen. I felt really badly for the girl, who was obviously a responsible kid and was just taking a lunch break from summer band camp with her best friend. She was very calm, until after we went back in to finish our lunch. I could see her dad hugging her while she cried into his shoulder.

It still amazes me that a town like Cortez, which Edward Abbey referred to as the Shithead Captial of Dipshit County, Colorado, and was listed recently as one of the ten worst places to live in Colorado, has this awesome LBS. It has more inventory than most (all?) of the bike shops in Durango and always has knowledgeable staff. They transition to winter sports when the snow flies.

The truth is, Cortez/Dolores/Mancos are in the heart of outdoor recreation paradise at the transition from high mountains to desert with easy access to both, a depressed economic base, limited access to high level health care and awesome mountain biking. The area is being "discovered" because nobody can afford to live in Durango.

Off to Telluride this morning to volunteer for Tobin's Telluride 100 race. The monsoons have kicked in and put out the forest fires, but it looks like there is a low chance for afternoon thunderstorms on race day, so all good! They'll be some Mojos there and lots of other Texans.

An 1up compatible adapter can be purchased for 2" receiver too, that's what I have.
