From what you described you are doing, that is probably plenty of computer for what you are doing. You didn't mention the actual amount of ram though. For Win2k I'd run at the very least 128MB of RAM.

I first bumped it up to like 385megs which helped alot, so I then bumped it up to like 950megs, which didn't do much at all... so yeah, I think I've got enough memory. And in reality, I don't think the machine is slow or bad or anything, I just think all my programs have gotten corrupted in many small ways. Explorer, Word, Media Player, etc. etc., they all have several little sporatic bugs that periodically make my life hell.

Windows ME & 98 really don't take advantage of memory over 256MB. W2K does.

Windows ME was an abomination. You will be much happier with W2K. Btw, that is plenty of RAM.

Yeah, sounds like your machine is fine, should be plenty for Win2K.

How much FREE hard drive space do you have? Win2K is bigger than ME ...

Make sure when you back it up, that you put it on another drive or media before you format. Call this stupid but I've seen so many people format the drive and lost all backup data because it was stored on the same drive. It's one of those funny but sad things and needs to be said

Alrighty then... So I got, and have reinstalled MS Office from Raycer X... Word now opens but I have to redo all my toolbars and buttons and shite.

So, now I'm thinking I'm going to re-format the drive. I've got tons of BS on the computer that I don't care if I lose, but lots of other stuff I do want to save.
But here's an interesting problem I've stumbled accross that one of you IT guys can explain:

I've got a bunch of 700MB CD-R's that I'm downloading stuff onto... no problem, until I get to my music files. Despite the fact that the files are only 3.5 megs each or so I can only save like 15 - 20 songs to one disk. Where's the rest of the 600 megs that are suppose to be available on that disk? Why can't I load these CD's with 700megs of music like it should?

Also, is there some other means to save all this data... I've got like 10 gigs of music and videos that I want to save... at this rate that will be like 1000 CD-R's !!!

Sounds like you are making audio CDs. Try making a data CD instead and trasfer the mP3s.

Are you running any Virus protection software. Alot of viruses can reek havoc on .dll files and such. And ditch WinMe and load 2k like the others have said. You might want to run scandisk too to make sure your HD is in tiptop shape.
Bliss, bliss and heaven... it was gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh...Oh, it was wonder of wonders... And then, a bird of like rarest spun heavenmetal, or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now...
