A PLEA for help - NOT Bike Related

First off, I'm self-employed and I work ALOT on my computer.... 90% of what I do comes out of Microsoft Word. Pretty much, my entire business and hence my livlihood is wrapped up in the Word Documents on this damn computer.

So my computer sucks and has been spitting out all kinds of error messages in all sorts of programs. I keep meaning to get a new computer but I haven't gotten around to it.

Last night things got critical. No matter how I go about it, MS Word will not open! Nothing! Nadda! Zilch! It starts to start up then I get this error message: "Winword has caused an error is MS09.DLL. Winword will now close". And that's it!

I've tried restarting computer 20 times, tried scan disk and still nothing.
So I'm thinking that if I can re-install Word then I'll be able to get at all my files. However, I don't actually have a copy of MSWORD, as I think I just borrowed a copy from someone when I first got this computer. I think the full version of Word (Not MS Works) is like $300 or more.

So I'm pleading with any Mojo's out there in the Mojo listening area: If you have the actual real version of MSWORD or MS OFFICE I can borrow so I can reinstall it and get my business running again.
I've got a project that was suppose to be due today that I got my client to wait till Monday, so if anyone can help please let me know ASAP.

    P.S. I won't tell Bill Gates if you won't

Hate to say this b/c you are a great guy, but it seems kinda silly not to own a copy of the software so vital to your business.

Star Office (Sun Micro) is not a bad alternative, especially if you are mainly doing word. Only 80 bones.

    Open Office is Free.

Both let you use & export to word formats.

    My two cents

Yeah, as far as price-efficient alternatives, Star Office is a good deal. I also hear that at places such as CompUSA, they are very "nonstrict" about checking educational ID's for educational software purchases - which would make Word around $100 or so... just what I've heard...

Ray is gonna hook me up. . . I just hope this works...

On a related note: Because I'm having some many problems with my computer (all software related)... I'm thinking of "reformatting" the thing... like I use the boot disk thingy... ya'll nerds know what I'm talking about right?
What do you all think of this idea? Obviously I need to back up all the files I want to keep, but what else should I think about.

I actually format and rebuild my system software once a year no matter what. I mean, I'd rather plan the event than have it be forced upon me.

Make DAMN sure you have backups before doing it. I would HIGHLY advocate moving to Win2K aftewards, it has a LOT longer shelf-life than WinME if all you are doing is word docs ( and you're careful about email 'n web virus 'n stuff ).

However, Win2K does have greater system requirements than WinME. Depending upon your computer it may not make sense to move it to Win2K.

If it's your bid'ness though, you may want to consider upgrading your system, buying a new box ( e.g. not monitor, just cpu, keyboard, mouse ) and moving onto that.

Ok, so supposing I am in the market for a new "box" what does everyone recommend (ie., brand, features, price, etc.) I currently have a Gateway with an AMD Atheleon (sp???) 933mhz, with maxed out ram.
