    Newby bike purchase advice

My 14 yr. old daughter and I would like to mountain bike together. We are looking at the Jamis Ranger SX, Giant Sedona ST, Giant Cypress ST, or Raleigh M-40. Any experience/impressions of these bikes? Are there other offerings in the $222-250 range here in Austin? Thanks very much!

Buying used makes sense from a value perspective but it takes some time to learn bikes and values. If you buy new, at least you have a shop to help you. Its a trade off you and you have to figure out what fits youR situation. Also, at $250, you are looking at entry level bikes- I wouldn't get too worked up on brands or even specific models. To the degree you can compare, look to see if one has a better component package. But mainly find one that youre comfortable on and can afford. If you and her really enjoy it, eventually you'll probably upgrade and by then you'll have a better idea of what you want and like. Good luck and welcome to mountain biking.

The OP was from 2004. I'm thinking his daughter has moved out of the house by now.

I'm wondering what the daughter looks like.. she'd be 26 nowadays

Probably fat. Dad didn't get the advice he was looking for on Mojo, daughter doesn't get a bike, eats donuts instead.

She never gets married, no grandchildren for mom and dad, they end up divorced because of it, daughter now clinically depressed because of divorce she caused.

All because no one responded to a simple question.

    Thanks Mojo.

Remarries a man from the Middle East. Converts to Islam. Becomes radicalized. Sets off a dirty nuke in the Houston ship channel. Thus beginning a cascade of events that leads an end of life as we know it.

All because no one responded to a simple question.

    Thanks Mojo.

and Mom is in a passive-aggressive revenge relationship with a tatted-up, Strava-obsessed coffee & craft beer fanatic, leg-waxing roadie who never has time for her because really, she is tragically un-hip and doesn't understand embrocation rituals.

She grows up and ends up dating a serious Austin shred head who buys her a Scott. He later breaks up with her. He posts about many details of their breakup and future trail adventures.

The good news is she has a bike to ride and is part of MOJO.
