i was referred to as a "hippie" yesterday at work

getting the usual 'new guy' questions - where are you from, why'd you come to Dallas, do you like it up here, what kind of riding do you do...then i was asked whether or not i raced.

"nah. not into that...just like cruising along."

the interrogator laughs a little and says "we don't have hippies like you up here. you see, it's not like Austin...our trails...see, the only motivation we have to ride, and keep riding, is racing."

i laughed on the outside, but on the inside, i shed a little tear.

here's your clue that the guy is a total lameass. Obviously he doesn't understand the true meaning of riding a bike.

People from Dallas race? I don't remember any of the top riders being from Dallas, so if all they do is race then they must really suck at leisure riding.

What are you doing in Dallas? You need to run as fast as you can and don't look back. Could be worse.. You could live in Houston.

Well, the good news is that's total crap. I lived and rode in Dallas for over 4 years and never once raced.

i believe what he is trying to say is that the trails are not as inspiring as they are in Austin. call me crazy, but if i were stuck riding trails like WC all the time, i would've given up long ago. (i don't know what the trails are like up here, i've only been to one, so far...Grapevine Lake, or something like that).

    Dude,

Your best bet on something Austin-ish is the new Sansom Park Trail. It has some nice steeps and swithcbacks. I enjoyed it quite a bit. http://www.cowtownmtb.org/

Cleburne State Park is also quite nice.
