I'm not exactly sure what Garmin bases their calculation off of. I would have thought it was the equations that I mentioned before with some conversions thrown in, but with some of the super-human numbers that are being thrown out there, I kind of doubt it.

I think that the reason the HRM equations are off, especially for mountain biking, is because they wouldn't work for anything except for steady state riding...like 1 hour maintaining a HR of 160 the entire time. That's almost impossible to do mountain biking.

It also depends on how fit you are, as well as size/weight/etc. Using the now proven highly inaccurate Polar HRM method, I burned 1258 in 93 mins with an avg HR of 150 (max 174) weighing in at 193 with lungs a 9 year old asthmatic girl would smirk at. My gf burns just over 600 during the same ride. Yes, she hates me for that. Not sure why, since I am about 1.9x her mass, her 600 calories are probably more significant than my 1200.

I keep telling her to carry weights when she rides, but will she listen to me? of course not...

    Today's ride before work:
    1113 Calories in 1:03:03
    Avg HR: 156
    Max HR: 173

Regardless, I big-ringed the trail today and felt like a manly man.

Most of these posts assume the same rate of calorie burning. There is a big difference in the way I ride from ride to ride.

    Hell yeah!
Okay, I'm going to have to try one of these. Seems I've been wasting my time with all this expensive beer. What really sold me, was the scent of cat urine in the beer, because, how can you argue with something that natural?

See, you learn something every day.

This calorie discussion is interesting, yes? So take what you think you burn, cut it in half, and then add those calories back after the tacos and beer and call it a wash. Done.

riding some "technical" trail doesn't mean jack shit when it come to calories burned it all about energy expenditure trust me I'll burn a lot more calories on a three hour road training ride than some one of similar build riding three hours off road.

like I said unless you have a power measuring device SRM/PowerTap your not going to get an accurate reading of calories burned. I've got both a Polar HR monitor and a SRM the polar is W A Y off from the number that the SRM has for calories burned. The only time ive ever seen 3500+ calories burned have been on 6+ hour rides on the road the type where you come in feeling like someone has beat you with a bat afterwards.

I highly doubt that your 45min pedal and stop pedal and stop weekend warrior ride has you burning more than 600 calories so I suggest you check how you have your HR monitor set if you want to be halfway correct.
he forgot to mention that he also rides with a thermometer up his ass so he gets an accurate temperature to calorie burned ratio......

    Kind of depends.

For 2 1/2 hour group rides on the GB backtrails (Dump Truck, Panty Line) for around 19 miles is about 1200 calories.

Fast 2 hour solo ride at Walnut Creek (25 miles) is about 1500 calories.

These are from a power tap wheel.
