Walnut Creek Workday Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 10:00AM til 1:00PM

    What: Walnut Creek Workday

    When: Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 10:00AM til 1:00PM

Meeting location: Western edge of the pool parking lot (dirt/gravel parking)

What to bring: gloves, shovels, and rakes.

Description: With the recent rain, several of the erosion problems have been highlighted. There are several small fixes that can be done with the soil is moist and the trail is closed to riding. ARR member Cullen McMorrow will be leading the effort and will have waivers for all to sign. If there are enough volunteers, the worklist includes:

    (1) New layer of dirt on BMX Loop S-berm that we looked at. It has some log protruding. Needs about 12 wheelbarrows of dirt. Also can address some of the root issues on the climb immediately following that berm. Location is Grid Box #LL15 on the map.

    (2) Wheelbarrows of dirt to fill in the water-created-rut in the big-drop that goes into the left turn berm. This is the first spot we went to when you ride Northwest behind maintenance area, over new rock bridge, and past Point 6. On the grid map, it's Marker 314.

    (3) Dump wheelbarrows of dirt to re-cover roots at the Root Drop (at Marker #304). We would pack the dirt on the roots and block the two cheater lines. It would be intended as a preliminary/temporary measure to assess whether a more engineered long term solution is necessary (which, as we discussed, it probably is).

    (4) Dig out various water-bar drains and replace dirt to re-build water bars. Various places on south side of the creek, e.g. in vicinity of Marker# 452 and #446, as well as Mark's Art, and Tangle of Trails.

    (5) New berm at that spot north of the S-berms that we went and looked at. Roughly in the area of Marker #414 on the grid map--although I'm confused on the map exactly where that spot is. (When you come off the fence line in the south of the park, go down the trail to the table-top-into the S-berm, and after you exit the S and go about 100 yards north, down the hill, that drop to left turn spot.) Berm is needed because sharp decline causes riders to skid, causing erosion, and causes some riders to ride off the trail.

    Thanks,
    Rich

Neat. Can't make it, but I love that trail and appreciate the improvements.

BTW, that list above is going to be like 4 or 5 different work days ! I'm planning on doing #1 Saturday, but if we have a big turnout, we'll do the new berm (#5).

If someone could bring another wheelbarrow that would be great. I will be bringing one.

During the few days after a good rain, the dirt is incredibly good for building/shaping things. You just move it, shape, rake and pack. So much better than digging dry and hauling buckets of water !!

    2nd half, new berm:

Next 180, small berm added (maybe beefed up in future):

The new berms getting some action. Here's a clip of Jake C. riding the Tangle of Trails Flow Section.
