My recommendation, depending on the age I guess... for my first son (he was 6ish), I started with a 16" bike, dropped the seat and removed the cranks/chain... I was shocked that he was ready for pedals within a few days. For his little brother (3-4), I got a 12" like new at Goodwill for $5 and didn't bother with the cranks, just pedals, and he was ready after about a week. IMO, dedicated balance bikes are a waste, unless the kid is really little or the bike is free.

We bought this fisher price thing at 12 months that has two narrowly spaced rear wheels. He used it instantly.
    Strider at 14 months (Xmas)
At 30 months he just started striding in an open field one day and doing laps on a hill at the winery.

He watched us watch MTB YouTube content and XCO races on rebuke tv and started asking for MTB at 2.

At 38 months, he asked for pedals randomly while watching YouTube. Little did he know he was getting a Spawn Yoshi 16 a few days later for Christmas. He is super tall so we went ahead with the 16 and he has no issues. He is pedaling if we help him in and he takes off. He is ok with crashing because I told him “everybody crashes”.

Josh will be loving the field by Peddlers pass.
