The Austin Auditorium - old airplane hanger (i think) next to the city colesium.... Home of the Austin Stock Show and Rodeo, and for special events like the Harlem Globetrotters and the circus.
The Filling Station Rest across from the city colesium.
Had almost forgotten the Holiday House and the gator. They had one on Burnet too (without a gator).
Anybody watch movies at the Burnet Road drive-in?
Rooster Andrews Sporting Goods (the old old one on Guadalupe, which was replaced by the one on Guad that is now a washateria).
Oscar Snowden appliances - "If you didnt buy from the Big O, you paid too much"
Willie Kocurek's store - what was the name? "You dont need money, just a little bit a month!"
Bucks Feed Store on Lamar - were we bought Purina feed

Ok, anyone else remember these? Still can't believe this went away, but once the cry babies bitched about the noise of the speedboats on Town Lake (yeah its still town lake to me), it eventually went away. Used to have car and motorcycle racing around Parmer, theme nights on auditorium shores, etc.

Oh and the auditorium mentioned above was also where you went to see Ivan Putski, the VonEricks, The Shiek, Andre the Giant, and the list goes on.

I've toyed with the idea of a retro MTB ride. You must be on a vintage bike (ok, pre-2000) and we'd ride an out and back from Barton Springs to the HOL. Party after at the hillside theater with an old school slide show of Austin mtb from back in the day.

Night Hawk restaurants (also in San Antonio), The Armadillo, Villa Capri, a motel on the east side of South Congress on a hill where the staff drove jeeps to show people to their rooms, a record store/head shop on 24th around the corner from the first Whole Earth Store (the name will come back to me), Katz's Deli, a hamburger place on the NE corner of 12th and Lamar.
Raise your skill level to the level of the trail, don’t bring the level of the trail down to your riding level.

Don't mind me, I'm just along for the ride.

Whole Earth started out in basically a closet in the southeast corner of that building on 24th and then moved into the area originally occupied by the record store. Then they moved around the corner to the current location.
A picture of the staff in front of the original store is in the WEPCo scrapbook here
Go over 3 pages in the Scrapbook and there is a picture of the staff on the steps in front of the old store. I was surprised to see myself on the top row, second from left (braids & headband). I do remember the move around the corner to San Antonio St. My boyfriend at the time did a lot of the woodwork in that store.
Just cannot remember the name of the old record store.

That's a cool photo! The music store was Inner Sanctum Records I'm pretty sure and that house also had the first skate shop "Let's Go Skate"!!

I would say this city sucks now in ways that it hasn't before.

I would then say that this city rocks in ways that it hasn't before.

The main thing is that this city has changed dramatically in a relatively short amount of time. For people who were around, it's just fun to be nostalgic.

Several Fresh Plus stores still around, in fact one was put in the original Sun Harvest location; Sun Harvest was around for a long, long time and basically got a dagger in the back a few years ago.
No, our city does not suck. Bike lanes abound. Lance Armstrong Bikeway. The Multi-Use Path. Our city is attempting to make things bike friendly to some degree. The Lady Bird Lake Hike/Bike is awesome and will be even more so when the floating boardwalk is completed.

Breeds is still on 29th St; I love the current iteration of Wheatsville and I think Conan's Pizza is still at 29th and Guadalupe to name of a few stores still around. The city center on Congress has revived.
I think what bothers me more than changes in the fabric of the city itself is the relentless sprawl out west that makes it hard to GET OUT of the city, or to get back home once you've escaped. After visiting family in SE Texas, however, I can take 130 from Luling to the Parmer exit and cut about 30 minutes off overall travel time.

Used to go see Stevie and Jimmy Vaughn at club foot. I remeber when Cardi's on Burnet was the happening rock club in the era of parachute pants and Loverboy music, lol

No, just different as was said. Some good things gone, some good things have taken their place, Change is inevitable.

I still watch Dazed and Confused when I see it on TV, because it describes my life and the era to a T. The Moon Towers, Top Notch, cruising the streets ( we used to do laps around North Cross), parties at the lake every weekend...good times for sure

Willie Nelson's golf course is even for sale! $3M kickstarter for mtb trails/fun park?

Went to k-12 with his daughter, Paula. She wasn't very nice to me.

I have been in a hot tub with Willie.

Well, The Armadillo World Headquarters and The Vulcan Gas Company were the shizola, back in the day. Hot Tuna, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, Asleep at the Wheel, Johnny Winter, Steely Dan....and I digress.
