Speaking of 183- that road was HELL, it was 6 lanes of stoplights from Cedar Park to I-35, I learned real quick how to use Spicewood Springs and avoid it. I lived off Hunters Chase for a bit when I went to ACC (Rio Grande which is all there was) and for an 8 am Class I had to leave by 6.55 or I wouldnt make it.
I remember going to work with grandpa riding the bulldozer with him building Mopac 2222to183 in the late 70s

yes, I remember people used to have "Pray for Me, I Drive 183" bumper stickers; it was congested AND incredibly dangerous. A friend's sister living in Burnet survived commuting to UT on the old 183 throughout both graduate school (PhD) AND law school at UT.

Yep - rode them many times. Those were not some of the better trails but they stayed open for a LONG time.

Now you have me thinking about moto trails from way back -

First and foremost are the day and night MX tracks off Ed Bluestein and the river.
East of 360 from the river to 183 all the up to Mesa (all houses now)
Both sides of Spicewood Springs road out to the current St Ed's Park (unmentionable area)
Driving Range (NW corner of 183 and MOPAC up to current shopping center)
The trails between Driving Range (above) and the Quarry Lake at Pure Austin Fitness
Old Quarry (Where post office and HEB are now surrounding the Old Quarry Library)
Tiger tracks (where Sugars & Sailboat Shop are now)
Peppertree Park (roughly where Austin Energy facility is now off of St Elmo east of 35)
Where my house is now (Yikes!)
    Where Seton Southwest is now.

When I started riding off road I would ride from my apt at roughly 183 and Burnet rd to the Pennybacker Bridge, then down the ridge to the west until we could get down to Lake Austin. Some of those trails are still there but clearly aren't used like they once were.

And the only one I know of that is still open - City Park Motorcycle Trails. (Please don't call the 'Motocross' trails.)

Not even that long ago. When several hundred riders would show up to ride the jingle bell ride and they didn't charge. It started at the entrance to the trail of lights went over to congress up and around the capital and back. Man was that fun. Now it costs $17.50 for reserved parking.

Yup, the Trail of Lights Jingle Bell Ride was huge fun. The city screwed us on the last one in which ARR participated and now we do a ride in a neighborhood with lots of light displays, which is just as fun since you aren't dealing with downtown traffic. Check it out here.

I miss Waterloo Brewing. It was one of the first victims of the downtown property raping a pillaging spree. The ironic thing is that spot is still vacant. Pisses me off every time I go past that spot.

I also miss the "Pre-Katrina" 6th Street. The happy hour buffet at Jazz on 6th got me through my first two semesters at UT (I spent the third semester on scholastic probation, but I digress).

I miss Lake Travis on a hot summer day when a hydrofoil is way more fun to ride than a mountain bike.

Yup. Saw a bouncer getting the absolute shit kicked out of him for asking a guy to come back into the bar with his drink. 4 guys proceeded to beat the guy to the ground in a matter of seconds before the police surrounded and maced everyone. That was the last time I hit a bar on 6th.

Made me laugh. Reminded me of the bumper sticker, "Bomb'em all. Let God sort them out."
