Well that explains a lot. I like both Dove bars and tang.

    Crank and Drank
Every Tuesday, year 'round, weather permitting, at 6 pm.
This will be the first Daylight Saving Time ride of the year. There will be grilling to celebrate that fact.

    On our neighborhood FB page......

“A little over an hour ago my mom and I were hiking on XXXXXXXXX with our dogs and a biker almost hit us twice. The second time my mom politely said “you should slow down you almost hit us and can hit someone else” at which point he jumped off his bike and began following us but mainly her. At this point he started telling us he won’t slow down for anyone and dogs aren’t allowed and asking us what we’re were gonna do about it. He was touching her shoulder to shoulder. At this point I started pulling my mom away from him but he was super aggressive about arguing with her. I’m only making this post because we hike often out there and we actually left because we were both very uneasy. He was around 6’0 blondish hair, wearing a white biking jersey and blue tight biking shorts. I considered calling 311/911, but given the circumstances these last couple days I decided against it. If anyone has any info or advise I’m all ears.”

Geez. What is wrong with people?

How old was the guy? Did you notice what he was riding?

I hope you and your mom aren't too shaken up.

I wasn’t there, someone in our neighborhood posted this. I will try and find out what color bike/helmet he had.

Find out as much info on this douchebag as you can and post it here. Let your neighbors know that the biking community does not condone this crap and we'll be in the lookout as well. Lastly, if that was me out there,I would have discretely taken his picture and called 911. F that asshat.

    Exactly.
I hope everyone is vocal in their online communities about supporting the mtb world. Use every opportunity to say, "I personally like the trails and the riders because..." The more positive support and public relations we can get the better. If we can get the uniformed homeowners saying, "Oh, I didn't think about that positive aspect of the trails" would be progress.

    Points to mention:

Mountain Bikers and Urban trails are GOOD

    -Homeless Camps.
They are discouraged by our presence and move on.
We can monitor them for city if asked.
    -Bad Guys
    Discouraged by our presence
    We will report suspicious activity
Why fear “access” to the back of your house? The street is closer and the bad guys can use the street to back up a van!
    -Wildfire help
    Would report smoke or flame
    Trails are natural fire breaks
Trails provide access deep into the woods for fire fighters
To repeat, less homeless camps, that have caused wildfires.
    -Trails increase property values
Cities and developers pay millions of dollars to build this exact amenity. Just like swimming pools and soccer fields.
-Mountain Bikers are the most active trail maintenance group
Keeps trails open for all user groups
Most mountain bikers will pick up trash, not generate it.
Work days remove invasive plant species that could enter homeowner’s yards if allowed to spread.

It would be helpful to know what area this occurred in as this person might ride there again and could be identified. I'm not an expert but I'm thinking the incident was borderline assault on his part. And it also sounds like he might have been hyped up on something. It's one thing for a rider to have a close miss with hikers, and even shout something negative at them after passing, but to return and then get off your bike and get involved in an argument, that's a whole other deal.

I have to make a trip down south this morning (the horror) and have never ridden the Violet Crown Trail. Can someone advise on the best place to enter the trail?

    TIA

The VCT starts at Zilker by the pool. It serves double duty as The Barton Creek Greenbelt trail of course. When it exits to 290 at Specs, it now turns into single duty VCT only.
Or, there is a new parking lot that marks a new VCT trailhead at the intersection of Convict Hill and Latta Lane/Brush Country. The concrete trail goes south into Dick Nichols park. Formerly the center of the SATN universe so a pretty good starting point for SATN exploration.

South of Dick Nichols there is currently more construction of the VCT. But they are allowing access through it during construction. Very cool and very atypical of this sort of construction.

When are you coming down? I was trying to get off my ass and go for a ride. I'd be happy to show you around.

What part of the trail? Most ofnthe main trail in BCGB from Zilker to Spec's at Brodie and Ben White is VCT. The next offical section that is done starts behind the Arbor Trails shopping center at Latta and Convict Hill and winds into Dick Nichols Park. They are clearing the next section that leads toward the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower center now as well.

Are you looking to ride that short paved section or the mtb trails?

The Specs at the top of Brodie is right by the trailhead. Think itís easiest to park there. Turn left on the sidewalk on the way out and the trail is on the left. Might be other ways in- not sure, but thatís a pretty convenient place to start.

By the way, even though the SATN is easily accessed from Specs, I don't think of the BCGB portion of the VCT as part of the SATN.

Thanks all, I didn't realize that the BCGB from Zilker was considered part of the VC now. Interesting. I'll see if I can find the other end over at Spec's. I've never dropped in from there before. I haven't ridden down there for probably 4 years, so I guess it will be new stuff to me anyway.

The Tip. I'm heading that way in about and hour, but I have some errands to do first, and I won't really know how long that will take. Appreciate the guided tour offer though.

Ok, got a chance to do a short ride down VC from Specs. Definitely not what I was expecting. Well done! That's a punchy little bitch climbing back outta there

If I have to come down that way again in another 4 years, I'll try some more

    Thanks all

My buddy and I are riding tomorrow. Anyone interested? Either at 10am or around 2pm. Thinking about starting at that new trailhead by the wildflower center, to circle c and back, or whatever we decide.
