anyone know if the legality of passing through the South Hills Conservation Area? I rode through Sunset Valley trails and was headed south to Stephenson today when I was confronted by a hiker with some dogs who was building a log barrier on a trail. she told me that bikes are not permitted in this area. (I told her that building that little barrier is going to most likely result in a lawsuit when some runner trips over it, I warned her of the coyote I saw, I want on my way. she was annoyed but the conversation was polite enough.

the signs that connect Sunset Valley and Stephenson seem unclear to me. I don't want to pass through there and piss off the locals until they take more drastic measures to keep bikes out. what is the best route to get into Sunset Valley? I am not certain that SV has the best trails, so I could afford to skip it if needed. there is definitely some fun terrain in there but I cannot remember if that stuff is in Sunset Valley trails where bikes are "allowed" or if that is South Hills where it is frowned upon.

on another note, I had a run-in with a coyote on the trail in SV. the coyote came bounding on a trajectory perpendicular to the trail, landed on the trail five feet in front of me, then bounded back into the woods. Either the dog was hunting me and realized too late that I was too big to eat, or was not paying attention and just happened to cross my path at the wrong moment. I got a good laugh out of it.

a minute later (still in SV), I rounded a corner on a wide path and a lady who was coming toward me with three small dogs (on leash for once!) tripped on a rock and landed on a cactus. I helped her up and felt terrible about the whole thing but she admitted fault for her own clumsiness. she must have been distracted from where she was stepping and tripped. I watched the whole thing in horrified slow motion. we had a nice little chat about trail conditions and coyotes and parted ways. stuff like that needs to be handled carefully so as to not leave locals with a bad impression of cyclists.

Mack, sent you a PM. Officially South Hills is no bikes. There is nothing in there worth getting into trouble over.

thanks! I think the Conservation area starts where the trail goes around a barbed wire fence. i will avoid that in the future and find a workaround to get into SV.

Yep, coming from that direction, you're not gonna see any signage. The easiest legit way is to come out from the hobo bridge and hop on Brodie for a minute. There is a street across from the Lowes' that you can turn east on and get into SV. You'll see a jeep track to your left, not far from the intersection.

My take on it is that bikes are not allowed up the hill, but are along the creek trail.

That sign just over the creek that use to say "No bikes" is not there anymore. I thought that one of us removed that little button. But it has not been replaced. I certainly don't want to call Sunset Valley to get a definitive answer because it might not be the answer I want. But there is now no signage coming either way to say no bikes.

If a walker says something to me other than "hello, how's it going" I would just say, "I didn't know about that" and go on my way.

But, as Greenblur says, between the creek bed and Brodie (that you can access at the end of Oakdale Drive) is for sure bike friendly. The Big Southie north route had us exiting there, coming out to Brodie, then dropping back into the trail right in front of the lube place to go under William Cannon.

thanks for the update. the trail just north of the hobo bridge under Wm Cannon is short but so fun! how "off limits" is that area between Wm Cannon and South Hills? Should I be talking about it at all on here? I suppose it's not entirely kosher to ride through there, but maybe there is a way out that does not involve riding through South Hills. if not, I would not mind riding right up to the edge of South Hills and then riding back the way I came. I would rather stay out of South Hills if they don't want us riding through there, but I would like to connect that to SV via dirt if at all possible.

Sunset Valley Park and Open Space Management Plan:

    page of the document 9:
"The South Hills Conservation Area is open to the public for foot traffic during daylight hours on marked trails. From time to time, access to the tract or portions of the tract may be limited in order to let the area recover from ..."

the other sections covered in this document mention permission for foot, equestrian, and bicycle traffic, so South Hills is very limited. I think I found a way to ride without backtracking and without going through South Hills.

Yes, I have seen this. That is why I interpret up the hill as the off limit part. Even though there is trail up there, I never ride there. This is what I think they are referring to.

That's my story and I am sticking to it.

The trail behind the lube place is on City of Sunset Valley land. I assume that the natural trail there is kosher as it is merely on parkland.

" The Dry Fork branch of Williamson Creek is ephemeral and has a confluence with the main branch of Williamson Creek at the northwestern edge of the tract. "

yeah, that is rather vague. is the trail along the south side of the creek part of this tract or not? regardless, I can avoid it and probably will do so to avoid conflicts with neighbors building hurdles on the trail to show how stingy and un-neighborly they are.

At some point we need to look into the acceptance of bikes on the South Hills area. Note that the Gaines Creek portion of that document also says "open to foot traffic". The Violet Crown trail runs thru the Gaines Creek portion and now is clearly allowing biking.

Well gawd dang. It's true. You do learn something new everyday!

We were just talking about what the creek's name was that runs along Whirlpool and Candy. On the Strava maps it calls it Williamson Creek. But every other map I have ever seen only calls the creek that runs under Brush Country to Mopac (through the Williamson Creek greenbelt, duh), then Brodie and through Sunset Valley, as Williamson Creek.

    Dry Fork Branch. Cool.

Anyone got an update on conditions? Depending on the rain gauge you look at, could be borderline-OK or could be a slopfest.

My home gauge had about 1/8th inch.
Just enough to settle the dust.

I'm going to try to get the wife out this evening for what will be a short ride. Know more then.

You only get your wife out when it's time to ride her? Lucky man.

Next time you see her, ask her to build a series of those interesting trail features. I rode over them today. I could use a tad more challenge, thank you very much! lol

Dirt is in great shape. EverWet is muddy of course. But I was still surprised to see how muddy it was. Also a little mud on Mopac just north of "the hump."

    Good stuff.

Congrats to person/s who pulled the rocks out of the only semblance of a rock garden at SCT. It is now officially a sidewalk.
