Speaking of stupid shit I don't understand...

...why would someone take apart the rock wall thing that was next to the barbed wire fence along the side of Slaughter Lane just west of the soccer fields? It was an interesting little feature. The thing that I don't understand was there was, and is, an available alternate line right there already. If you didn't want to go over the rock thing it was so easy to bypass it.

This happened awhile ago but the post reminded me to comment on it.

    Oh well.

I found a Houston West End Bikes water bottle on the ground today. I just put it up on a rock next to where I found it. It's just past Boulder Crossing going toward Mopac.

I wish I knew the answer to EverWet.

On the ATX Bikes Tuesday night ride last night there was more water on it than I have ever seen. And it hasn't rained!

I know there is water retention pond just uphill from it. But I cannot figure out their "release" system at all.

    Very strange.

slid through that on Sunday on a CX bike. that short rocky uphill on the way into Stephenson is brutal with narrow, muddy tires!

    Yup.
My wife is addicted to "Free" stuff on Craig's List. We have gotten some paving stones from there.
Maybe I will start looking. I swear the wet was 50 yards long though. Way longer than I have ever seen it.
That would take 150 one foot pavers. That is a lot.

What do you guys make of this little section along Williamson Creek?

This is facing west. There is a trail that follows the north bank of the creek, that, last I checked, leads nowhere, hence the barrier. The real trail crosses the creek right here and follows the south bank. Does the trail beyond the oft-moved barrier go anywhere?

That marks the beginning of the church's alleged land that is posted no trespassing. There is trail there on the north bank but it is now off limits, so, there is no trail there!
Those logs are there to direct traffic down the creek bank to the trail that runs along the south bank.

Good to know. I restack the logs when I pass by there so people will take the bypass but someone keeps moving them for no apparent reason.

This is perplexing me. Rode this again today. Yes, we received a 1/2" of rain since I posted the above, but it is WAY bigger mess now. I have never seen it wet that far towards the preserve before. The water was actually flowing down the hill onto the trail.

I called Water Works to ask if something was broken. The guy was very helpful in checking several different things. He was pretty sure it was not a broken pipe or anything. He suggested that maybe a natural spring has started up. He said that happens. Makes as much sense as anything.

I don't think paving stones would do any good. Not only is the mud section now up to probably 200 yards, but it is so thick that the stones would just sink after some use.

Great ride though. The rest of the dirt out there is about perfect.

I hiked around EverWet this morning to check it out further. The retention pond to the south has water in it. But the concrete spillway to the creek bed is dry.
I don't know how retention ponds work, but the water is definitely flowing through the wall/bank/dam thing. There are multiple water flows that start just feet below it.

It is a real mess in there right now. The length of trail that is muddy is probably 4X longer than the traditionally wet part usually is.

I was looking for a dry route. But the sheet of wetness goes all the way up to the fence that goes around the retaining pond. No place for dry trail to go.

It won't stop me from doing the Valero loop. Heading east on Candy when I get to the Brodie bridge I will just turn north and pop out on the Brodie sidewalk. Cross over Brodie then drop back in below the Taco Bell. The lot behind that strip mall (Cafe Malta, Ghandi Market, etc) goes all the way through to Taco Bell

You can borrow my McLeod any time. And my Mattock. And my weedeater. And my folding saw. And my ax. And my pry bar. And even my goofy Pith helmet.

Or, if you wanted to get into S.P. you could turn south at the Brodie bridge and cross over and go down to the trail head on Paisano.

I went out again today. Thinking about a solution. Thinking. Thinking.

Then it hit me. The solution is not to get closer to the source of the problem, but to get further away from it.
