So, I was riding on a new trail in Bauerle Ranch Sunday. I look up and two policeman are walking towards me. Shit! Are they going to tell me I am not suppose to be in this area? That would suck. But that was not it. They were out looking for a motorcycle guy that someone had called in about. So that was good. Not only were they hiking on the new trail, but they were trying to keep motorized stuff off of everything. I told them about seeing a cycle guy on the CC Metro trails a bit ago. Told them he was wearing a red helmet. The police said the reports had this guy on Sunday in an American flag shirt.

I told them thanks for the effort. And it was an effort. They were a long way from any trail head. They were out hoofing around looking for this guy. I was impressed.

I went for a ride today. The trails are in great shape. There were a few small puddles here and there. It was strange because the trails were not muddy at all.
    Get out there and ride!

Big Dip, in CC Metro, is dry. There was 4 feet of water there just last week. Stranger yet is that there is water 50' upstream. Stranger even still, about 100 yards upstream the water is still flowing, even babbling, as it goes over the rocks. Where is that water going ?! If anyone wants to see a great example of how the aquifers work, they should check it out.

I could do that. Maybe. I have a big day of riding planned for today. If I have any leg left tomorrow I'll be there.
    "Ride everything." lol
I wonder how much there really is. I keep telling people 50 miles of single track.

    Okay, I'M FREAKIN' OUT MAN!
Maybe not actually freakin' out, but perplexed for sure.
We rode past the Big Dip Saturday. There was water in it! Not deep, and not bank to bank, but probably enough to prevent riding across.
Just to remind you, it has not rained at all, in the last three days since I posted the above about it being dry.
I've said this before about the water around the SATN, it's like a ride at Six Flags, where someone is turning the water features off and on. It is very interesting to me.

Yes, it happened. Great fun, good ride.

I just went outside to get the paper. Today, Saturday, is going to be a glorious day! Clear and crisp, the front brought no rain. Which is actually too bad because we could have used a little bit to settle the dust. Yes, dust is starting to be an issue again. Remember dust?

So big papa, get your nuts down to Dick Nichols at 10 am. It's going to be a great group. We have at least four knowledgeable ride leaders so I don't think the groups will be huge. Four different skill/speed levels.

mack_turtle posted on the Big Southie thread about the following. I hope he doesn't mind moving it here.

You might have noticed some construction at the end of Latta where it runs into Davis Lane. I explored it last night and they are putting a little pedestrian path that extends bike/walking traffic from Latta into the neighborhood to the south. probably not terribly useful to s on a mtb ride, but good to know in case you need it as a shortcut. hopefully they are at least putting a street light there too, because that area is super dark at night.

    the path basically does this:

So that new constuction is the official route of The Violet Crown Trail. That is why that new section depicted is being built. That new bike lane stripping on Sendera Mesa right where it runs into Slaughter is also a part of the trail project. The trail officially goes behind the drug store too. Progress.

The original routing of the trail is to NOT go beside the west end of the medical office building, as we do now on their gravel trail, but to go behind the office building, and then to the east side of the nursery school, on some city right of way land. I'm not sure if there will be a light, but I know they will paint a big crossing on Davis. The fun Deer Park run is not the official VCT route. It is only a city park.

Is the sign marking the way to Dock Nichols park new or have I just failed to notice it till now? I love the idea of trail markings but have been worried about the tree people getting mad about them.

I haven't seen it but if its nailed to a cedar no one should care.

My personal opinion on signs is that they shouldn't exist.

IMO these trails are a total maze. If you are not at least familiar with the roads on that side of town it could be very easy to get turned around. There are also quite a few turns that will lead you into backyards, apartment complexes, and neighborhoods.

One of the main reasons I mentioned signage above is that I would like to work to mark out a few loops, just some standard "blazes" painted on trees, to help navigate. Though there seems to be two, sometimes extreme, opposing opinions on the subject so I want to do my best to keep everybody happy.

Maybe low-key colors, or something that will eventually biodegrade. I'm open to ideas.

As far as showing you around, you're more then welcome to come get semi-lost with me Saturday and/or Sunday. Though I will admit to not being either warm or talkative, and plan to ride 3+ hours.

    aMAZing you mean, right?

I recently went exploring in Mary Moore Searight park. I had not ridden over there in a long time. It was interesting. I was totally lost and turned around. But I didn't panic or anything because I was lost, far from it, I was enjoying the exploration aspect of it. How could I panic when I knew I was only 200 yards from a street entrance to the park?

That is how the rest of the SATN is. Yes it can be confusing to riders new to it. But it's not like you are going to get lost in the wilderness and die. Or even that you are going to get lost and be 20 miles from your starting point. You will always be able to pop up on a street and get oriented. So go explore TruDom.

By the way, I was able to get to Mary Moore Searight from the rest of the SATN by riding along the railroad tracks, until I was just under Slaughter. I then turned south again and was on road for less than 1/2 mile. Not a perfect solution to the holy grail, but a legal way. There has been truck traffic next to the railroad. That chunky gravel stuff that use to be unridable is now packed down and it okay to ride on.
