    lol

And those cavemen's suggestions are about as serious as some of the stupid crap we say on this forum. Just shows that we are lots more similar than different.

The City of Sunset Valley had the meeting of the Environmental and Planning Commission tonight. It looks like we should be able to find a way around the South Hills Conservation Area. There is work to be done and it may become a dead end, but they seem willing to work with us to find an alternate route that does not include busy roads. It might even be all dirt. This may still take some time. Don't expect it overnight.

When I left I saw two mtbr's riding down the sidewalk on Brodie. It looks like most, if not all, mtbr's are respecting the closure. Thanks to all. That makes it *MUCH* easier to find cooperative solutions.

Now, on to the Whirlpool Cave Preserve.

I certainly have not ridden through South Hills since they put up that gate. it's not worth facing the wrath of that one angry lady! if you ride to the gate, then head back south, you can cross William Cannon again and ride back into Stephenson. the sidewalk / bike lane on Brodie is not that bad and you can drop right back into the trail at the end of Oakdale. it's not as nice as just passing through the normal trail, but it works.

You laugh, but people are actually doing these things in California where the trail/equestrian/pedestrian relations have gotten so bad. When I was in SF, someone had strapped a rusty metal pipe with rusty screws to the trail to create a spike strip.

Can you still ride the ewok bridge without violating land use?

Yes, but you have to head back south almost immediately afterward.

That is on City of Sunset Valley land, but not the "protected" land that is past the gate. They could very easily raise issues with that too. Crossing fingers that they don't.

The land at the top of "The Terrace", right above the ewok bridges, is owned by the apartment complex that faces William Cannon. It's a big chunk of land. We need to be very mindful (quite? respectful?) when riding there. All fun stuff for sure. Crossing fingers again that Sunset Valley comes through with a nice solution for everyone.

And when I come out on the Brodie sidewalk and turn down Oakdale, I take the first drop in, instead of riding all the way to the end of the street. This puts me back on trail sooner, less pavement. When I get to the end of that trail, I turn right, heading away from Brodie. This makes a bigger loop of trail before going back under Brodie to continue this now modified Valero/Whirlpool loop.

I just took a short ride. I didn't get any rain last night. I live close to Will Hampton library on Convict Hill. Dick Nichols was fine. CC Metro was a little sticky. But the Veloway trails were very sticky. I was picking mud up, almost having to stop and scrape the wheels. I was planning on doing the south Veloway loop and going on to Bauerle, but I bailed out of the Veloway and came home. To wash my bike.

Maybe by this afternoon they will be okay, but it would be a mistake to go there now. I was very surprised at the conditions.

I went for a short ride in the greenbelt yesterday at about 5pm. Before I left I checked the radar, and there was a fairly localised heavy rain spot just south, which would have been right over much of the SATN. I doubt it rained for long, but radar looked like it was raining hard. So that might explain the conditions. Slaughter Creek Preserve posted on facebook something along these lines, after opening the gates on Friday morning, only to close again later.

Rode out there this evening, Veloway trails had some greasy spots but we're totally rideable.

I also rode over to check out the cavers progress on their fence and/or property markings and didn't even see as much as a trace of tape. I'm still unclear to where I'm not supposed to be.

Some mtb ambassadors are apparently in conversation with the cavers very soon. Sit tight.

Yeah, I live in Circle C west of Escarpment just south of La Crosse. We had a pretty serious localized cloudburst at about 4:30PM Friday. It was certainly enough to soak the trails that it covered.

I'm heading out to ride for an hour or two shortly. I'll take a look at the Circle C/Veloway trails since they're on my way, but assuming they're not in good shape, I'll plan to hit Dick Nichols, Latta, etc.

UPDATE: Circle C trails are fine. Didn't ride much of the Veloway trails except to get to Deer Park Run. Rode out to Drip Drop and turned back because it was getting pretty swampy. Everything else was pretty much fine, though.

We met with the Texas Cave Management Association folks who own the Whirlpool Cave Preserve. It was a very good meeting. We think we have a solution that will work for everyone, cavers, mountain bikers and hikers. We will move the trails away from the cave and block the old trails. For now we will be allowed to continue riding that area. I say "for now" as in until somebody on a mountain bike does something to piss off the land owners. I hope that does not happen.

We hope to have the new trails approved this week. If you see flagging out there - leave it alone. It needs to stay up until the land owner has a chance to see it approve the replacement trail location. Comments on the flagging are welcome but remember that the land owner gets to veto any suggestions. Once approved we will cut the new trail. Hopefully, everyone will immediately see the new trail and prefer ridding it over riding the old trail. This is a chance to replace boring, flat trail with flowy, sustainable, interesting trail. At least that is what we will shoot for.

While both trails are open (a few days?), you can ride either trail. After the old trail is blocked, please ride ONLY the new trail. I am hoping we don't need to put up caution tape or signs. We will start with the least obtrusive markings (none) and add more if we see problems.

And the most important part is - be nice to everyone you meet. You never know when someone you were rude to turns out to be the person you need to get permission from.
