Also a sorry to the guys with Jones bars for making that second pass a little close, I was in a zone and you seemed pretty comfortable in our first encounter.

Anyway, the weather is beautiful and the trails are in great shape, and now there is a little less veg on Valero and one less major face slapper over by the tracks. Go ride!
I don't think they are on Mojo.

I don't know about SATN specifically. But Walnut was fine last night. I suspect that most of SATN would be fine also. Just watch for the usual wet spots.

I'm mad at you. You FORCED me to go for a ride in this beautiful weather! But I had to go to Home Depot anyway to get a nut and bolt to repair my brand new Silky saw that fell apart at the swivel joint. So I'm already over being mad.

I dropped in behind Valero. Everything was good all the way to Brodie. But I had to stay on the south bank the entire time because the fun whoop dee do, in and out of the creek bed to the north bank, was way under water. So was the creek crossing right under Mopac on the west side. The crossing under Mopac on the east side was passable though. Sunset Valley jeep tracks were soft, but I was not throwing mud.

But then I went under Bum Bridge and the trouble started. Water in the creek. Feet got wet crossing from the Taco Bell side to the Stephenson side. Then more water in that short ditch heading towards Brodie. The "dry" trail below Everwet had standing water on it. Just west of Brodie I rutted up the trail. I'll have to go back to smooth it out. Then walked through more water past that super soft spot.

The creek bed bypass, with the rollers, next to Whirlpool Cave, was okay. Mopac to the Dick Nichols turn off was okay. My plans changed though. I was so encouraged doing the Williamson Creek Greenbelt part that I had planned to go down to CC Metro to check it out. But I was too muddy and discouraged after the Candy/Whirlpool passage

I can't guess when everything will be good. Probably tomorrow evening. The SATN is so strange. For example, Gravel Crossing was full of water on a Tuesday Crank and Drank a few weeks ago. Probably three feet deep. But it was rideable on that Thursday.

Sure is a pretty day though.

The wife wanted to ride, so out I went again. Dick Nichols was fine. Mopac south of Whirlpool was fine, EXCEPT for about 50 feet just south of the small retention pond.
Like I said, it changes so quickly, example being in Dick Nichols. We rode over, with no problems, some very defined deep muddy shoe prints that obviously happened in the last 24 hours.

    Crank and Drank is on!

I just took a ride looking for mud. Found a little but the ride was way fine over all. A few more hours of sun and wind will only make it better.

See you at the back door of ATX at 6 pm. Late comers can hurry to the Mopac Sidewalk crossing at 6:15 to meet up. That crossing is dry by the way.

OK, here is the deal. There were over 30 people this past week. We broke into three groups. The fast, the not as fast, and the least fast. "The slow group" has really been a misnomer. This Tuesday, the fast group averaged just shy of 11 mph. The least fast group averaged a little over 8 mph. These speeds might have been a little slower than normal because of the caution taken with the maybe muddy trails. Remember these are Strava average speeds. That means sometimes the least fast group goes 14 mph, sometimes 5 miles mph. A urge everyone debating on whether or not a Crank and Drank is for them to download the free Strava app to their phone, go out and ride some SATN trail, and see if your times would allow you to fit in. But even if you don't want to do that, come anyway. If you can't hang there is no harm in dropping and heading for the shop. There is always an easy way back.

We always welcome new riders. The more the merrier. But, this is not a "no drop" ride. The Crank and Drank is a weekly activity that everyone looks forward to so they can ride. There are other group rides that are no drop. For example whenever there is an ARR Meetup ride I gladly will lead the no drop slowest group. It's all about expectations.

I hope that explains it all.

I can speak from experience that I've kept up some weeks and felt like I was solidly mid pack and other weeks I've been way at the back and even broken off because I was holding the group up. It's a good group ride and definitely pushes me to improve.

On another note; does anyone have a trail report? I'm planning to show a friend around the northerneastern half of SATN this afternoon and I'd like to avoid mud pits.

That certain preserve in the "northerneastern" part is one of the slowest recovering areas in the SATN. But I am betting everything is good to go right now based on what I have seen. You might see some soft spots but nothing will be a slog-fest now.

Everything over there is good to go. On a side note there is some development right at the northern end of the Train Robbers section. The trail was blocked with a large stump and there was a clear cut and a small bobcat sitting there on the south side of the creek. I'm guessing an eventual re route will be needed.

Well they certainly can't build anything in a creek bed! Utility line going in maybe?

I just looked at the city's permit site and it looks like maybe Mariposa Montessori School is moving and building a new campus there.

I am sorry for your frowny face. Did you raise your hand at the beginning of the ride and let the ride leaders know that you were riding chill and didn't know the trail?

My experience with that group is that they are uncannily nice and accommodating. Freakishly so. They are like a bunch of Stephford Wives in spandex sometimes. They smile and shout "great bike", and "how about this weather" and "glad to see you out" as they drop you like a Pro in Kid's Kup. But I'm projecting.

And if you do get lost, when in doubt, hang 3 lefts. Or call Uber for directions (oh snap). Or your mom (oh snappier).

J/K. I'd be happy to show you the trails anytime.

I ended up riding to MMS. Conditions were good until you get closer to 1st street. I wasn't here for the rain last week but I can only imagine the gully washer. There's a lot of heavy brush and debris. A clean up might be good after the rains clear out next week.
