    3. Go ride your bikes.

On another note, can we talk about crossing the road. At Slaughter there is a cross walk, the trail leads right to it, there is no reason to a responsible person not to use it. Davis is a bit of a different story. Northbound I just merge into the bike lane then over to the left turn lane when safe. Southbound is a little tougher to be "legal".

Long story short I'm sick of being treated like some spastic child by drivers because other cyclists will just jump out into traffic where ever the want. Also I'd hate for the trails to get unwanted attention because people complain, or someone gets smoked.

South bound, a guy cussed at my 13 yr old because he stopped waiting for her to cross. She didn't think it safe to cross. Mexican standoff. He yelled something like "pull your bed out if you cast!" Dunno, something like that. Could we maybe agree to head down to the stop sign or light with large groups?

    Probably a lazy fisherman?

So we are talking about crossing Slaughter Lane coming up out of the Veloway trails by the drug store? When I'm alone I usually cross right in front of Walgreens, using the mid-median turn lanes as my stopping point between lanes. I don't think this is illegal but it is far from ideal. Big_papa, is that what you are trying to discourage? When I'm with a group we always go to the light at Sendera. This is the actual Violet Crown Trail routing.

What are you suggesting at the end of Bambi, crossing Davis, heading north? Or south too I guess, same problem both ways. Agreed it is not a good crossing, and cars have indeed stopped to allow us to cross, even though we aren't wanting them to. Are we illegally jaywalking? I understand your south to north move, a u-turn from the left turn lane. Not far out of the way, but you still have to for sure watch for cars.

Being a bike commuter I get into these interactions all the time. Needless to say it's frustrating when you catch heat for NOT breaking the law.

At Slaughter I'd personally like to see everybody using the crosswalk every time, but I'm not your dad so as long as you use your method and exercise a large margin for safety it's probably fine.

At Davis I think at minimum we should be using the median cut. Going north just merge over like your driving a slow car. Going south I usually try to ride the sidewalk over to the Primrose driveway, wait for traffic to clear, and cross in the break in the median. I prefer to cross all the way in one move to avoid hanging out in the middle making people nervous.

I'm not super worried about the legality of any of this, more so I just hate being treated like a kid while I'm out riding because every other cyclist drivers tend to see is acting like a child.

This cures the problem of those Mexican standoffs that happen. Just get in the street on the bike lane facing away from Mopac. Then, you would think, the cars will assume you are traveling east (and you are) and not worrying about us crossing in front of them. I'm good with that.

Another warning about that booby trapped sidewalk needs to be made. There is a one foot high "wall" at the end of the sidewalk heading towards Mopac right before the driveway of the medical building.

You mean info like there apparently is some original trail that's been discovered INSIDE the Canterbury loop that is different from what we have been riding? And that it's a flowy, falling, twisting fun trail? That sort of useful information? There's even official signs that say "for bikes and hiking only" that makes it official stuff!

Heading south... Turn left as I come out of the trail. Ride along sidewalk, under Mopac to stop sign crossing. Cross Davis as cars are stopped to let me go, or street is clear.

    Pretty simple.

Go to the traffic light to the east of Walgreens... Press the buttion on the light post... Wait for the crossing light to come on... Cross... Carefully, as drivers still turn onto Slaughter even with the crossing light on.

    Pretty simple.

    No, it isn't.

Teach kids the rules. Make sure they follow them. Consistency is what's needed. Gives better defensive ground should there be an incident.

Got a chance to ride south side trail from heading east starting at Escarpment bridge... Seems like there's a need for a little maintenance to face slappers. Not sure if it's a problem for riders under 6'4", but I had little branches going through the holes in my helmet.

I'll be walking through it lopping off/trimming tomorrow.

I'll try not to touch any rocks... Really, really hard.

    :-)

But if your over zealous people stop listening and that's no way to change things.

You have to pick your battles and slowly little successes will turn into big change.

    Vandalism.
That's all I can think to call some "trail improvements."
I was sickened to see an example of this on the Canterbury loop last night. The log feature that is close to the Manchaca Rd bridge has been disassembled. Very, very discouraging.

I guess the bypass wasn't enough for whoever keeps dumbing down the trails.
