But there is a difference between mitigating unseen dangers verses obvious "risk vs fail" dangers.

Going back to the ski area analogy; an Olympic style ski jump looks pretty friggin dangerous to me. I would never attempt it. But nobody is going to go burn it down because "someone might get hurt on that thing?"
Absolutely... But if there's one path and it's over something that has a element of risk to it, and there's enough space to build and alternate path that doesn't have this element of risk to it... Then why not build the alternate path also.

It's really not rocket science... And quite reasonable.

And anyone with have a brain reading what I've written in my comments should get that it's the only thing I've been suggesting.

The a-holes who thing I am saying to dumb down trails either have a hard time understanding simple English, or are just, well, a-holes trying to strut their a-hole stuff on an online thread. Which is pretty par for teh course on online forums.

Keep all the harder features in a trail system, and build more... I'm all for that, and will help build them. But while we're at it... Make sure there are alternate routes built too.

Robert Downey Jr. is an charming a-hole. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer, an a-hole. Now that I have a purported fan-club I want to go on record saying that I technically fall into the former. The rest of you are on your own. Push like and subscribe!!!

Not sure how I'd missed that all along since I ride pretty much everything around it all the time. Anyway, that's definitely a cool (not so) little stretch of trail. Quite rocky in places, but good to have a new segment. Combining that with Hielscher, disc golf, and the south side of Slaughter Creek in Circle C, I was able to get in just under 13 miles on the west side of Mo-Pac alone!

Anyway, just wanted to say that it's always fun to discover new parts of this network of trails and wire them together into an ever-broadening variety of routes! I think I'm up to 5 or 6 mostly distinct routes that I ride on a regular basis ranging from 12 to 20 miles depending on how much time I have that day.

By the way, apologies if my description is too specific here. I'm never 100% sure how fuzzy I need to be when talking about various segments of the SATN.
Your descriptions are fine. And yes, ain't it great? I'm an old guy that's been around the block a time or two. I know I shouldn't get as excited about all this like I do. But I do! The being able to connect things and not have to repeat trail (Booooooooo!) to make a good ride is fantastic. "I'm going for a ride today. Just what am I going to do? So many options. Let me think...let me think." Fun.

You guys realize he has a point. If you don't build alternative lines around some of the harder stuff it almost guarantees that it will be sanitized.

I've said it over and over that I agree with the concept. IMBA agrees with the concept. I think a lot of the problem in this debate is in the nomenclature. Alternate line vs Alternate route.

Care has to be taken to never mess up the original "challenging" line when creating an alternate way to do it.

RMB... I've seen everything but a mellow mood around here from some. Balance things out... Get on their case too.

Or stick with me, the easy mark.

And yes... Having grown up in Jamaican I really have a kind of mellow mood. Not the mellowest... But 80%.

My deal is simply that I've seen others on these boards jump people for little or no reason... And then harp, and harp, and... OMG... Harp some more... On what they think is an issue but is really a non-issue.

And they do so with pure BS speaking.

It kind of sticks in my craw and so I respond accordingly.

Meaning... When in Rome do as the Romans do.

But the poor attitude of some on this board hasn't stopped me from being a positive participant in Austin's mtb environment. I support local bike shops. I help with some trail maintenance. I promote the activity to non-riders. And I haven't been nasty to any other users of the trail systems here in Austin.

This morning I helped with some trail maintenance... I didn't try to tell anyone how to do anything... I simply showed up and asked what I could do to help.

If the above makes me an a-hole... Then so be it.

    It's all good.

Shoot... After not riding for some three years, I bought myself a bike — '07 Cannondale Prophet — that I'd researched and made up my mind to buy... And I found on craigslist a like-new garage find in Tampa Bay, Florida, exactly what I wanted... And paid just $325 for it (+ $95 shipping to get it to Austin). I was stoked... But when I started speaking about it on a thread I was told I should get myself a new bike because the old bike I had just wouldn't cut it re. geometry, fit, etc, etc...

I just shook my head and smiled. And made a few comments of my own in response.

Not a "Hey man, excellent find, glad you're back riding, and with the awesome steed you wanted."

Okay, so the above is a bit lame... But it makes my point.

Anyway... Here I go again... Rambling on like the old man that I am.

RidingAgain while sometimes his responses can be somewhat inflammatory they are in no way any more trollish than anything else that gets stated in this thread. People are automatically hostile towards him and are quick to insult. I am sure much of it is not intended to be mean spirited but it certainly comes off that way in the amount. As an outside opinion of someone who was not initially enraged by his question of altering the trail...as it was just that a question. I think that much of what he has said (not the responses to people ragging on him) has been fairly constructive as well as aiding others in the understanding of trail rules and Austin mtb bro codes (which can be very confusing as the first rule of fight club is...).

Mojo can be incredibly toxic and much of his responses have been in response to that atmosphere. I have no qualms with the guy and completely understand where he is coming from even if I do not agree with it all. Responding with constructive comments vs spiteful ones could quite possibly be better for our community.

Burn me at the stake but its just like my opinion man...

My comment on this is that there is always a back story when it comes to people's reactions. There are many, many trail builders that frequent this forum and they put hours of blood, sweat, and family/riding time into making trails that we all enjoy. When someone even alludes to altering a trail or changing the character of a trail, there is going to be an emotional response. In a forum like this where there is no body language, those emotional responses can spiral out of control. I've seen some all out internet fights on this forum and would imagine that 9 times out of 10, if the two guys met for a ride they would sit down and drink a beer together and talk about stupid mountain bike standards or something.

I'm no graphologist, but it seems like time was spent on the misspellings and grammatical errors. My vote is someone wanted a second voice on the forum so created another account. So I'm calling bs. I mean, who can't spell t-h-e? Else, my 7 year has become jealous of my Mojo time and is getting back by trolling. Regardless, someone is getting a time out.

I fully get this and understand the gut response, but my response was more directed at the follow up comments that were intentionally inflammatory. Ones that insinuate an individual does not know how to ride a bike and should stop etc...

Saying "hey man please don't alter the trail we worked hard on" is very different than "hey man, fuck you stop riding bikes. If you even look at my trail in the wrong way I shall rain fire and brimstone upon your house and then kick your dog." (not a direct quote)

Just think there is a constructive way to do things and a not so constructive way. Etiquette on trails and how we talk about trails in Austin is very difficult to understand by comparison to other places. Sometimes it can seem a little bass-ackwards and this is coming from someone who has called this home their entire life and ridden here for 18+ years now.
