    South Austin Trail Network

    Slaughter Creek Preserve
    Circle C Metro
    The Veloway
    Bauerle Ranch
    Along/Under Mopac
    Dick Nichols/Latta Branch Greenbelt
    Connectors
    Others
    Sunset Valley
    Violet Crown

South Austin has lots of sanctioned trails. A great resource for us.
Here is a place to discuss them.

I rode Circle C Metro, The Veloway, and most of Mopac this morning just to check conditions. It was tacky but I was not even leaving tire marks.
The oldest creek crossing in Circle C Metro was the only crossing that was blocked by water. The others were good to roll.
Still water on the concrete spillway under Escarpment.

Love all the new trail in South Austin, I've got about 80 miles of connected trail I can access at the end of my street.

Add in the Whirlpool Cave loop and Stevenson Preserve also.

Thanks for all the building and maintenance!

I consider Barton Creek Greenbelt as a Southie kinda place. I like that Stevenson Preserve area and the sculptures.

I work north and my fiancÚ works south. When looking at houses, one of was going to get hosed (can't afford to live central). Ultimately this trail system broke the tie. I really enjoy having singletrack a couple hundred yards from my house.

Are they all sanctioned by the city? I don't see a lot of signage either way. I doubt anyone would complian, it's a great resource/selling point for these neighborhoods.

The areas listed and named in the first post all have sanctioned (listed on city maps) trails. Not all the existing trails in each area are on the maps of course. Similar to the situation in Barton Creek Greenbelt.

"Connectors" and "Others" (mentioned by name in Yooper's post) are all on city/public lands but I am unsure as to their status. I will say this about that though; at the meeting a few months ago where they were getting public input about the routing of a certain part of the Violet Crown Trail, some homeowners along Williamson Creek, between Mopac and Brush Country, were up in arms about the trail possibly going behind their houses. A city official put them in their place by saying, "That creek is already public park land. You can not stop anyone from walking or biking on it right now." So, as Carl Spackler would say, "so we got that going for us."

I agree. It is easily accessed from the south trails without ever having to ride on a street.

But I didn't add it to the list because there is already discussion about it other places here. Reports on trail conditions, ride calls, work done, etc.

Just rode Valero to Whirlpool loop.
Some water at both Brodie crossings but rideable. Still some stick'em on the Sunset Valley jeep track and on Whirlpool. Not enough to clog up the wheels though.

You can probably connect Onion Creek to the Greenbelt via Mary Moore Seawright, Buerle, Slaughter Creek, Williamson Creek, Stevenson Preserve, Sunset Valley, etc and have already ridden 30 or so miles before entering the BCGB.

Onion Creek?! But, but, but, that's in EAST Austin!
    lol

I am curious how to connect Bauerle to Mary Moore Searight in a sanctioned way. I can get close.

You have made me look at a map for a path to Onion Creek Met Park. And of course that connects into McKinney Falls. All that would be very bueno.

I wonder if there is a cool way to get under I35.

I'm thinking a Southside Enchilada may be in order. Gotta figure out the best loop.

That would be awesome!! I am so excited about these trails! Rode 18 miles from my house with only 2 road crossings!!! And had miles of trails that I didn't even hit!!!!

    Yes!

I'm envisioning spirited planning sessions discussing the routing while doing a little imbibing following some pre-event rides.

Got in a quick pre-xmas lap this AM. Everything is in real good shape and I didn't see another soul out there.

Stephenson to Dick Nichols is a no-go for at least two more days. Dicks to Latta to Cicle C was in great shape.

I am assuming that this route includes a little road, on Barstow, to get back to Circle C.
Coming from Latta do you go the way that ends up going under Davis Lane, or do you hop the log and go the other way to the trail that parallels Clairmont that puts you on top of Davis?

I hop the log and come out at street level on Davis. Then I go up Davis and turn west, which connects you to Barstow.

You can skip the street if you climb the hill where Davis ends, and cross the school to Slaughter Lane to hit the trail by the Storage Place.

You mean skip Barstow right? I always have gone down Barstow coming or going, but doing what you suggest adds good trail mileage and eliminates that little bit of street riding. I do go up the hill when I am going to go over and down to Slaughter Creek, just never thought of doing that just to come around to Circle C.

See how useful this thread is? lol
