how about the "unfinished bridges" over Walnut, that have been constructed for almost 2 years but still have orange construction fences up?

Specs so you can "best buy" more beer then "feel good in the neighborhood" with a burger at Applebees?

wait, are you talking north- or south-bound? going south, you can easily go through the Best Buy/Specs parking lot onto Brodie. some sidewalks might be involved, of course. I ride up and down Brodie all the time and it's a pretty easy route that seems safe. if you don't like the shoulder/ bike lane, which is sufficient, the sidewalk is fine so long as you're cautious around the driveways.

I know this is late in response to the OP, but that article is really misleading. I think the contractor wanted to set up a crane on the existing bridge to lower beams to the new bridge.
The article makes it sound like the new bridge was going to hang off of the existing bridge and engineering was not approved. I'm sure the "engineering" that needed to be approved was whether the cantilevered weight of beams on the end of a crane could be supported by the bridge.

Yes, I was thinking southbound - what it connects to, once it arrives at the turnaround.

I'm actually interested in this bridge crossing for three reasons:

    1) It should allow for much longer and safer urban rides which connect parts north to points south and perhaps the South Walnut Creek paved trail, etc.
    2) It allows me to 'ride to the ride' - for example, riding from central Austin where I live, to a Big Southie Ride and back.
    3) Now and again, I can do a wussy crossing of Barton Creek on Green Belt rides, if it's cold and the crick's been a risin'.

once you get to Spec's, you go under Ben White and you are in Sunset Valley. take the gravel trails through the shopping center there and you are in the Cougar Creek GB. from there, you can get to all that Big Southie stuff - Williamson Creek, Stephenson, Dick Nichols, Slaughter, Circle C, etc without riding (virtually) any roads.

Yeah, it's gonna be nice. Saw those big beams and cranes in front of BB this morning. The BB/Sams/Specs parking lot can be busy at times, but I took my son through there a couple weeks back and it wasn't a problem. I think there will be an official hook up to the VCT to avoid that?

Looks like the current plan is for it to dead-end somewhere near Best Buy. Still, with that and the VCT - new ways to travel north-south and vice-versa.

It's all good, regardless of how it connects. I have ridden over the Mopac bridge. I will go against traffic when I am northbound because there is a bit of shoulder there. But still, it is not fun. Anything will be better than having to ride Mopac.

TAF, the map on your link shows it dead-ending across Mopac from Best Buy. Like I said before, they really don't have a plan on how to connect it other things in a simple way.

And it will allow anyone to do a huge urban ride from Manor to south of Barton Creek with the only road being the two blocks of Shady Lane and the crossing of several drive ways along Mopac;s frontage road. Pretty cool stuff.

It also shows it dead-ending next to Best Buy, which is the happy happy ending I was referring to.

Rode past it today and people were working on it, on a Saturday.

I noticed that they were putting street lights up along the path that has been cut into the hill north of 360. VERY fancy! And that bench cut is armored with fancy concrete walls too.
As a biker I am sort of embarrassed by all this "fancy." Why do these things always have to be Cadillacs when a simple Yugo would get us there?

    lol

I guess I look at projects like this and wish that the money spent on it would get spread around. Instead of 3 miles of "A+" trail, I would prefer 20 miles of "C" trail. I know it doesn't really work that way, I am super excited about this bridge, but that's how I think when I see resources being spent this way.

I guess this is what happens when TXDOT builds a bike path?
IMO they could've cut in something smaller with a few bobcats and drop some prefab steel bridges on smaller footings and been done sooner. Maybe there's a secret plan to use it for emergency vehicles at rush hour?

I don't really think we should be complaining. Its nice, and I am going to use the hell out of it.

FYI, construction crew present told a colleague of mine to go ahead and ride across on MTB.

Now if only they would finish this 6 month, 2 block project that is the 3rd street bike lanes. Cyclists are already blowing the intersections almost taking out peds. Someone is going to get closed lined by a leash or get hit by a car which will be their fault.
