I also love how they have this jackwad guy's opinion about how "it doesn't seem that it's worth the expense" after it's already 85% done.

No kidding. Not exactly balanced reporting, eh? I would have gladly been the NEXT guy that they talked to for the story to say how I can't wait for the thing to get finished.

I sort of laughed with the "It turns out the overall plan for hanging concrete beams to complete the bike and pedestrian bridge was not approved by the Texas Department of Transportation."
I laughed because of course a bike trail builder would not get permission first!

" the biggest issues they’ve come across is finding cranes that will be available to do the job over a span of several days."

My guess is the cranes they rented are too heavy for the span or put too much point loading at the pads... or it could be as simple as somebody at TXDOT realized they need to get an engineer to say yes and nobody bothered to ask until now.
My personal opinion is the whole project is way overbuilt. It's not like they're trying to built the Tacoma Narrows span or something. I'm appalled at how long they're spending to pour in place so much of the deck, too... why not design with some simple precast pieces and be done already!?

As you know bridge is being poured. The beams are up leading from the turnaround across Barton creek. This is actually pretty neat and is not "hanging from MOPAC as I had heard.

The bridge over 360 is fully poured with the railing across and "could" be ridden across by a mountain bike. it is lightly barricaded of course, so I didn't ride. There is a 1 foot drop off on the north end of the bridge if you decide to go around the barricade before they have poured the sidewalk portion of the sidewalk.

I am actually pretty excited about this connection from a selfish mountain biking perspective. I have FAST access to the south side of BCBG when the water is high without having to ride anywhere near LAMAR.

This is how they build all 'bike' bridges. No wonder bike infrastructure costs so much. You'd think something in between that and some North Shore wood rigging would be appropriate...

I thought since federal and state Dept of Transportation money went into these kind of projects they have to meet DoT requirements. I bet they required it to be strong enough for a cement truck to drive on.

I saw two more of the monster beams sitting by the side of Mopac yesterday. Also saw that the smaller 360 overpass looks to have been built. Looking forward to the finished product! Anyone know where it's going once it crosses Barton Creek over Mopac?

I think it just follows the feeder along MOPAC to Zilker. you can see the path they have been bench-cutting into the hillside along the east side of MOPAC for months. from there you could get on the Town Lake Trail and take the pedestrian bridge under MOPAC to cross the lake and into downtown or take Barton Spring Road to Auditorium Shores.

    The southbound route is trickier.
We will be routed from the south end of the bike bridge over that existing car turn around bridge that goes over Mopac from that office on the east side to the La Quinta on the west side. But from there I am not sure. I have asked some officials at various meetings but I don't think they know either! We just need a good way to get across 290/71/Southwest Parkway to points south. The southbound frontage road from La Quinta is not very bike friendly right now.

I wondered about that curving section I spotted out of the corner of my eye. Can you also access the bridge via the aforementioned office building? In otherwords, if you went directly uphill on what is now doubletrack from the main trail?

Yup. You might have to dodge some construction equipment and such. But going straight up under the Mopac bridge puts you at the east side of that car turn around bridge.

I would never suggest using the unfinished bridges, but I know that some riders have been using the new pedestrian bridges across 360 for weeks, to avoid the creek crossings from zilker to hol.
