    Chann McRae!

    From the txbra racer's forum:

Chann McRae To Race 30+ at PH RR! posted by russ carr

Well, maybe if we had a '30+' race he would have. But since we only have a P/1/2 event, I guess that'll have to do. So all you 'old farts' have nothing to worry about.

Current US Pro Road Race Champion, Chann McRae, has graciously agreed to race at our big event as part of the 2003 Texas Cup weekend opener!! So come on out and watch the Stars & Stripes jersey tear it up at the Powerhouse Road Race at Pace Bend Park on Sunday, February 23rd.

But before you do that, please go directly to:
    http://www.bikereg.com/races/register.asp?EventID=629
and get yourself pre-reg'd. Especially if you're a cat 5!

Thanks and that's it, for now....

I almost signed up for this race today. I might just do it tonight.

Don't worry, you'll see me out there this season.

Wait. Who's that animal in the big ring? The one leading the peleton up the hill?

Why, That's Austin MoJo John Curtis! I see him now.

David, that's awesome! Nothing like a visual to get your blood pumping. I found myself thinking about road racing strategies as I tried to sleep last night.

    Guess I'd better race:

    =
    Name - John Curtis john_curtis38@hotmail.com
Event Name - Powerhouse Gym Road Race
    Event Date - 2/23/2003
    Category - Men 5
    Conf # - xxxxx-xxx

I see David James in the confirmed rider list. Who else is coming out? We could organise a pretty strong stealth Mojo team.

    alright, I'm in.

So we will need to talk strategy. If we can organize 5-6 mojos:
(Raycer-X, David J., Matt, John C., Mason, et al.) we would have a really good shot to break away early and have it stick. We'll talk more in the coming days.

    Good idea, Matt.

I’m so new at road racing that I wouldn’t know what a strategy was if one was handed to me. So, I’m crashing Velocity’s team meeting Monday night to hear Will Ross speak on strategy for the upcoming Pace Bend Road Race:

that's not a bad idea....to listen to Will talk strategy. however from my limited experience, I would say that much of his input will be beyond the ranks of cat 5.

a little strategy goes a long way in cat 5 because so many of the riders (myself included) have only a limited experience base. IMO the best strategy is to get about 6 strong riders to push their guts out and break from the pack. this group should be strong enough to keep ahead of the pack.........and since the pack should lack organization, it would be difficult to catch a very strong fast-moving group of 6 or so riders. So far, the entry list for the pace-bend race looks to be lacking any large team efforts so this should help our cause.

mojos should be the most organized out there.

From the results of his crits this summer, I’d reckon Will could talk about race strategy like it was 3D chess. But because Velocity’s mission is all about developing inexperienced riders I’d hope that Will’s presentation was applicable to his audience.

I agree that any strategies we plan (practice?) should be basic. But these packs are not always unorganized. Yesterday the Texas Flyers and the UT Longhorns showed some rather impressive (and aggressive) moves at Cele. Regardless, we kept reeling ‘em back in. Average speed was something like 19.5 MPH.

I'm in on the strategy thing. With enough guys we can do what the flyers did to you today

I may have just talked my non-mojo friend into joining us at pace bend, too. He has not been on a bike for a while, but he's a pretty strong rider.

I have started to think that the rei austin club might be the right people to join with. They are mostly road, with some mtb experts. It'd be nice to ride/talk to some experienced road racers. There may be 1 or 2 cat 5's in that group that could plan (scheme, collude, conspire ..) to break with us.

then I'll drive up in my brightly coloured (<--euro spelling) Renault and hand you bottles, giving you a little boost in the exchange. Your scheming (<---spelling?) sounds like fun. Maybe I'll have leg/lung transplants and join you.

Great article, Ed. Kinda like roller derby in spandex. I especially liked the old “bike-pump-thru-the-front-spokes” strategy. Always worked when we were kids.

In establishing team member roles, I think we should employ MoJo-like names: Instigator, Head Hunter, and Master-of-Arms, etc.
