    Stem size

How do you measure a stem? I'm looking to go shorter and more rise than what is on the bike but I don't want to guess about it.

stems are measured from the center of the bar clamp to the center of the steerer clamp.

most stems range from 70mm to 140mm.

most makers will include the info on the box top so check there and also check the stack height of the current stem to the new one.

this isn't too coomon a problem but when it does happen it can cause a bit of a headache. the stack height is the height of the steerer clamp from top to bottom. some stems like the Thomson have stack heights in 45-50mm range and some, like a bontrager are a little shorter.

if the stem you have has a larger stack height than the new stem, you'll have to add a few spacers so that you can properly adjust the headset.

if the new stem has a taller stack height that the current stem AND you have a few spacers to spare, you can simply remove how ever many are needed so that the gap from the steerer to the top of the stem's steerer clamp is in the 3-4mm range. for a pic of this, check out the mojo mag on headset adjustment.

last thing, after installiing a new, anything, check your bolts after 20 hours of riding. they can loosen.

also, some companies don't offer certain lengths and rises.

Here's the beauty, and a steal at $45.00! But I have a question, it states that you can only use Thomson spacers with it? All I have are the "normal" ones and don't even know what the Thomson's would look like. Will it really matter?

    $45 ?!?!?!?!?! that's some Sweet Action!

special spacers? the only one i know of, that's specific to the Thomson stems, is the one that reduces the stem size from 1 1/8th to and even 1".

as for headset spacers, i think you can use whatever you have on hand.
