    Broken Shifter - Schwinn

Hello new to this sport. I recently acquired a '90 High Plains. The shifts for the changer of the front gears works fine. The shifters for the changer of the rear gears however is not working. After taking the cover off I see that the left shifter (working one) has a black plastic piece connecting to the lower shifter as the right one does not. Hard to explain but I can see were the plastic broke.

I was wondering where I might order a new assembly at.

Ton of links on our Home Page, BUT...If you are new to the sport, you may want to have a Bike Mechanic look at it.

It's pretty much a bolt on componet from the looks of it. Just strip the one off now and bolt the new one on and attach the cable.

I looked through the links but couldn't find anything.

    kau welcome.

2 things need to be done.

    1. figure out if the brake lever and the shifter are one peice. one or two peice?

    2. how many cogs on the rear cassette? 6, 7, or 8?

if the shifter is a Shimano brand shifter, it is probably not user serviceable. you'll need to have a shop order the shifter or shifter/lever set (if it's one peice).

depending on the number of cogs on the cassette, finding the appropriate shifter might be tough as the older drivetrain parts are getting phased out. but many can still be found.

The shifter and brake lever are two different pieces.
If a cog is a gear? There are 7 gears.

Any clue a website that I could order that from? Or if not a good shop in North Austin that could help me. I don't think this bike was to expensive so I don't want to dump a whole lot in to it.

cool. separate is good on the shifter brake lever. 7 speed shifters can still be had. don't pay any more than $30 for them.

you may want to get on the Austin Ridge Riders forum and ask what shop they rate well in your area.
