    RIP Donald Lynn Sleeper

This morning at 12:45 Don Sleeper passed away due to his bout with cancer. His service and memorial will be on Friday or Saturday this week. I will post another thread when the date and time are finalized. I encourage all Mojos, Stormies, roadies and racers to attend, Don would like that.

Don was one of the Bottom Dwellers. Other Bottom Dwellers know why this is significant. Without bottom dwelling and without Alan, Mojo probably would not exist. Sleeper also created the only Ricky Raspa t-shirt I've ever seen.

His real legacy to us can be seen on the trails we ride. He worked on or developed almost all of them at some point. San Antonio mountain bikers have lost our biggest advocate. Sure, he may have strayed outside Parks and Rec to create trails, but his work was proof of his advocacy and realization that red tape usually gets in the way of progress.

If you had a special relationship with Don and would like to say a few words at his memorial, please PM me so I can have his brother schedule you in.

Remember Don, remember Vinny. We owe them a lot.

Fuck. Rest in peace friend. I didn't know you well enough, I didn't ride with you often enough, but I miss the times we had. I wish I had something poetic to add, but I'll leave it at I'm glad your battle is over may you be in a better place brother.

Damn, this is the thread I've been dreading to see here but felt it was coming sooner rather than later. I didn't know Don too well personally but I rode & cut some trail with him a few times. Without Don there would be no Night Train or Caboose or many other trails we all enjoy.

Heartfelt condolences to those he left behind. We'll all miss you Don and your passion.

Damn...if ever I met a guy who just had that great "vibe" about riding, attitude, and life in general, it was Don.

We'll miss you, but I know you are in a good place, riding sweet trails.

Don was instrumental in the perimeter and the trails heading out to Bandera Rd. bridge.

God Bless him and his family!

I didn't know Don, but read about him here. I am thankful for the contributions he made, as I get to enjoy them (OP trails) on a daily basis. I will pay my respects on my ride this evening. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

This is a thread we have been dreading, too. We stopped riding OP after Mainland got wiped out; it was Sleeper that showed us around again after one of the Basura Bashes. We went out there (OP) the very next day so we would not forget the loop he took us on - been riding out there again ever since. Every time we ride OP I'm thankful to Don for all he did out there. He has been and will be missed out there.

    ...

Don had more honor and moxy in his little finger than most have in a lifetime.
The last time we rode together was Ö. I think about a year and a half ago..
out one weekend way down night train and most of salado creek.... he had been working some convention out of town, It was an early ride on a weekend.. We were the only ones out there.
He hadnít biked in several weeks.. it was the first ride after that break. . he was doing fairly well, almost up to usual speedÖ for the ride outÖ. then when we got maybe about 45 minutes from Patricia Bachman.. he just totally lost his wind. .even.. almost lost the ability to stand up...rests had to be taken every minute or so, and sitting or laying down.. . It then took over two and a half hours to get back. I waited for him each time he had to stop for air. Even when he insisted repeatedly to go on and donít wait for himÖ I would never leave him behind after all the times he had to wait for me to finish bleeding. He didnít know what was wrong back then.. he just kept saying, its never been like this, it always comes back so fast whenever Iíve taken any time off from riding before.

I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Don, only knowing of him and riding his trails. He came to mind the other day when I was riding one of them.

I guess it is good to know that he is riding some new trails in a better place.

A while back there was a fund raiser for Don. Is there a need to raise funds to help out?

Way back in 2001, I began mountain bike racing in the beginner class. I had met Don on rides in SA and through STORM events around that same time. During that fun beginner season, when everything was new, I could usually judge how my race was going based on when Don passed me (he started two age groups behind me). He'd come be, wearing a STORM jersey with a helmet featuring a yellow wrap around visor - politely ask for room and offer some encouragement - then off he'd go, inevitably followed by Robert Dickerson in a matching STORM jersey. I want to remember him that way: fast, skilled and happily riding off in the distance, despite my best efforts to keep up with him.

Don was fast when he wanted to be: http://www.usacycling.org/results/in...d=156271&all=1
