    2011 Terlingua Thread

    Viva Terlingua 2011 !!

    Wednesday Feb 16th - Sunday Feb 20th.

Don't pencil it in on your calendar... write it in pen..... nay... use a black Marks-A-Lot marker and write it in BOLD lettering instead. This one will be a "don't miss" event.

    Done. Computer Marks-A-Lot.
Raise your skill level to the level of the trail, don’t bring the level of the trail down to your riding level.

Don't mind me, I'm just along for the ride.

Too bad there's gonna be a race again. It should still be fun...just not quite as much fun as the 2010 trip.

You may have read my post yesterday on Camp Eagle that for the past two years, there have been 1200 people through the gate out at the camp for the "race" event. 400 of those were racers. It seemed like all 1200 were having a really good time and if you were not racing, you were in the majority. I certainly had a great time this year, it was the best ever.

There is really no way of knowing but it seemed that in the old Chihuahuan Desert Challenge days & Mas-o-Menos days that there were just as many non-racers in attendance as there were racers.

Yeah, yeah...but my inner racer boi will beg to be unleashed if there's an event going on...so I'm thinking about attempting the marathon and just making an epic ride out of it.

I can help you put that "inner racer boi" back in the bottle... so_to_speak

I'm in favor of getting out there and staying out there ...like until Tuesday or Wednesday to do some of the Epics.

in of course, hopefully we can camp at the Boat house again. I loved having my tent within a tent set up.

Well Hammer, happy/sad to say that there will only be a festival this year, no race.
Here is what was posted over on the tmbra site:

    Terlingua / MasOMenos 2011

Quick note to let everyone know that there will be a mountain bike festival in 2011 but no race.

LONG STORY SHORT ON THE "NO RACE" DECISION: To complete a race loop, several miles of brand new trail need to be built and the event production team felt like we would be rushed to get all of it completed by this February and would not end up with a level of quality that we would feel proud of. Good news is that once these trails are in, there will be a 30+ mile loop open to the public year round for riding and a great candidate to be included on the list of IMBA Epics!

THE FESTIVAL : With no Mas-O-Menos race happening for the first time in six years, 150 mountain bikers came out anyway during the 2010 President's Day Weekend from all over Texas for semi-organized riding. Everyone who make the journey to the Chihuahuan Desert had a fantastic time and the end result of putting on a festival in place of a race for 2011 is something we know will be an unforgettable experience for all levels of mountain bikers.

During this past 2010 Pres-Day weekend, we got a chance to ride the Old Ore Rd. in Big Bend Nat’l park, a 30+ mile point to point mountain bike ride that ending at the Hot Springs near Panther Junction. The second day, we rode trails close to the Lajitas Resort that had not been ridden since the 2002 Chihuahuan Desert Challenge as well as others on that trail system that have been used for the Mas-O-Menos (2004-2009). And the final day was spent on the Contrabando which included a trip down Fresno Creek all in Big Bend Ranch State Park which most of the 150 riders in attendance indicated was their favorite ride of the entire long weekend. The majority of racer who have come out for the race over the years, have not had an opportunity to experience the other riding available in the area as they have been focused on pre-riding, racing or perhaps did not know that there were lots of other trails in the area.

Attn. Teams: This weekend is the perfect opportunity to hold a “camp” for you to get lots and lots of great riding in your legs as well as a chance to get away and get to know your fellow team members a little bit better.

So, I highly recommend that you keep Feb 16th- 20th 2011 timeframe marked on your calendar and make plans journey out West to Terlingua for what will be another fantastic long weekend of riding some of the best and most scenic terrain Texas has to offer.

More specific information about the Festival will be coming out between now & Thanksgiving weekend. As mentioned above the timeframe will be between Feb. 16th-20th 2011. I will see you there and hope we get a chance to ride together!

well the no race thing is kinda a bummer but if they can't get the connector trail built in time then they can't get it built HOWEVER the good news is that we will have a great time riding with tobin, jennifer and geroge again this year since they and cap will not be scrambling around trying to put on a race. I forsee at least a couple gallon jugs of tobins special margaritas and at least a bottle of don Julio tequila gone before the festival is over along with a few days of awesome desert riding and relaxing.

While seeing all the racer boys in their matching kits was awesome this year, I think the subliminal Burning Man feel capture the true spirit of the event.

That Burning Man feel wasn't so subliminal, especially when Josiah was pumping the pre-ride dub outta the Exploder.

I've colored in Wednesday to Wednesday with psychedelic highlighter on my calendar.
