New course record, crashes, a picnic: what more could you want

The Pirate Short Track series continued last week with our biggest field and best competition yet. Sean Ahmadi (360 Cycleworks) defended his title as Pirate King, seting a new course record of 22:20. Former record holder Cody Baron (Orthopedic Store), was on his heels for the first four laps, and finished a mere nine seconds back. Jeff Carmody (Bike Lane) was in their pace line through at least three laps before the prior night's crit began to catch up to him, but he still posted an impressive 23:48. Junior speedster Kevin Fish (360 Cycleworks) beat out five grownups, including his dad, in 25:02 despite having to untangle himself from your's truly after I fell asleep at the wheel and crashed right in front of him on the 2nd lap. Travis Inge posted a blazing fourth lap before finding out that it was a 5 lap race. Ian Hallet, riding on a borrowed bike a size to small, returned after a three week absence, and was able to maintain his thrid place in the series standings. Longhorn Chris Collins won the college division, showing some real fortitude after a hard fall to brush himself off and post his best time of the season, moving up to 4th overall on the series.

We once again had a great crowd turnout, with both the Ahmadi and Fish families camping out at the shaded picnic tables, encouraging the racers and enjoying the evening after the competition ended. Despite trashing a wheel out of sheer stupidity, even I had a great time. This will be the 8th installment of the Pirate race this Friday, so start your holiday weekend off right, and come enjoy a fun night of racing, relaxing and socalizing right in the middle of Austin.

    See you thar
