    safe road routes

I have been looking for a safe solo road routes and have been coming up short. I have found some awesome rides as far as the terrain goes, but the local motorist don't seem too interested in sharing their roads with a fella in "them der tight stretchy short pants." I have looked into the Scott and White cycling team and am planning on joining. I would however like to find a group a little closer to the Nolanville/Harker Heights area. Does anyone have any input? I am always willing to ride as long as I am not working.

I'd be interested in a local bell county road club section that rides in this part of the county as well. I have a couple road rtes on motionbased that aren't all that dangerous. at least I have never come close to getting hit on them. i did have a couple red necks in pick ups slow way down and go around me with "the stare" on occasion. but that's happened on the safer rtes in Temple also out by the factories when I lived there the first time in the area and rode solo.

I usually opt for my Lone Star Beer cycling jersey on solo road rides. The rednecks seem to be more cordial that way.

That's one way to throw 'em off. Got a chuckle out of that one (approach).

cycleruss6 - Have you tried Map My Ride? Do a search in Killeen, Harker Heights or Nolanville.
Personally, I've always thought there were friendlier roads East of I-35. Drivers in the Killeen area scare me.
There's plenty of group opportunities with the BCCC and also the SWCCC. Come on out and join us. The Saturday a.m. rides usually break up into 2 or 3 groups of different levels and distances. I'm also available most mornings, and do my share of solos during the weekdays when everyone else is at work.

pauly--problem is---going to mayborn or bell co expo or temple lion's park is just too centric. Bell County should include routes that start from pther places as well.

map my ride has some rtes-some of which are probably also on my motionbased page--sorry there's-shudder--no convenoence store to speak of to stop half way.

Why??? People are most welcome to start a group to ride, just as the BCBC has. I think there is too much rotation of folks in Killeen. Cove has there group, but I don't see why people from Temple would head to Killeen for more traffic and less favorable routes. And the span from the expo to mayborn is like 10 or 11 miles, so it's not like they are lumped together.

by centric, i really meant just too far for me to want to go on a routine basis. which is why i was hoping there would be some bell county bike club rides that might want to start occasionally (like maybe a ride a quarter or something) from other areas. I do realize 1 club member does rides out near Sparta/BLORA.
anyway sometime ago I think I hinted at hosting a road ride in the South Killeen to Stillhouse area, but I understand most think it's too dangerous---and I'll admt I;ve only ridden the routes a handful of times spending most my time now on the MTB.
