I'm thinking that I might maybe possibly go. So count me in as definite probable.
The ride starts at the Upper Crust Bakery, which is at 45th and Burnett.

As of 5 minutes ago, I was going to come, but when I called Grant he threw out the idea of he and I riding a long ride together. I called the daycare, and they can take Phat-head tomorrow, even though it's not his usual day, soooo we have the whole day to goof off.
The problem with us doing the bakery ride is that the daycare doesn't open until 7, and I think they frown upon leaving babies on the front porch of the day care.
I'll come next Tuesday.

Leave Phathead with Grant while you do the Bakery Ride. It's over by 8:30. then you can take PH to the daycare and goof off after that. ;)

I should have specified, our "goof off" is going to be a really long bike ride -- like maybe the Buda to Gruene ride or something like that. I don't want to try both for fear that I would bonk half way through the 2nd ride with no sag wagon in sight.

About how far do ya'll go and what is the avg speed? I have been road riding more but am still not in the best shape.
If the info isn't too intimidating, I might try to come out for a second try.

the ride really depends on who shows up but we try not to drop anyone (for too long, that is). I'm one of the slower riders and my computer says that the pace varies between 13-14.5 but that includes some good climbs and lots of stop signs and lights and a couple of cigarette breaks.
I think you came with a knobby tyred mtb last time, since you've got a road bike and some miles under ya, you'll have plenty of fun.

Don't worry, I did it last week and I have had my road bike for 2 weeks. I am coming tomorrow morning.

Old Schooler ... I AM VERY GLAD THAT YOU ARE OK!!! I was really freaked out when I saw the bike begin to slide out - especially with the truck right in your path. Again, I am glad that there seemed not to be too much damage done to you - the bike on the other hand ...

let us know what the final damage toll is for both body and bike.
It was nice to see everyone, and I look forward to more rides in the future.

I was behind OS, but missed seeing him slide out on the turn. I remember thinking to myself "I better take this turn pretty slowly", and when I made it around, he had just gotten up from his fall. I'm really glad that it was only the bike that was damaged.
So, OS, tell us the details!

we were coming down a hill (some neighborhood near lake austin) Anthony then OS then me. There is a 90 degree right hander at the bottom of the hill, I was about 15 feet behind OS when I saw a truck parked right in the line he was taking - I grabbed some more brakes to slow down as it was slick, but OS had already begun to slide, and had one foot unclipped .... then SSHHHRRRR boom CRACK .... he had hit a parked truck and trailer. I picked the bike up off of him, and he started walking - no sign of blood!:D
The bike seemed to have taken most of the damage - bent rear wheel & cracked seat post (carbon), some damage one of the shifting / braking hoods where all visible.
I'm sure his version will add some more detail ...

It was a good ride this morning. I made it a lot further this time though barely. A little excitement thrown in the mix made it a memorable ride for me. After the crash, the only thing that I really remember was a really, really big hill... It looked like OS was ok physically but his poor bike...
I will have to come out to this ride more often so that I can get use to climbing...
Thanks,
Mac

Good to meet you this morning ... that hill is Mount Bonnell - i think it is the highest point in Austin ... a great local climb!
Hope to see you in the future ...

Yeah, me too. I was too plugged up to ride, couldn't breathe. I miss all the good stuff. Really tho, I hate when people crash and get hurt. I am glad you're okay OS.

Gather round kiddies and I’ll tell y’all bout the time old oldschooler bout broke his damn neck on one of dem skinny tire bikes…. Damn fool!!!
So there I was, riding along, minden my own bid-ness, just riding along. . . when alls a sudden this huge truck (I think it was one those 10 wheeled jobbers) comes flying around the corner with AC/DC blaren out the stereo and beer cans fallen out the bed. I try to miss him… I goes left… then he goes left, so I goes right, then he goes right… that sum-bitch was trying to kill me! Then BLAMO, all hell breaks loose! Yep, I went straight threw that windshield. . . with me bike still attached to me feets!. . . and straight out the back window, bitch-slappen the driver as I flew past for being such an inconsiderate bastard. . . finally coming a stop about 25 feet behind the truck, still up-right and still clipped in. I woulda kept on riding too, ‘cept my damn rear wheel had gotten bent all to hell when it got caught on the truck’s gear shifter!
Ok, so the “real” story is a bit less exciting and tends to put me in more a poor light:
I was coming down that hill too fast and didn’t see the parked truck on the far side of the street. I would have easily made it if the truck wasn’t there, or if I wasn’t going so damn fast. (I did tell you’all that I’m REALLY FAST. . . . . . . . . on the downhills, right?) Because the street was wet, when I grabbed my brakes the rear wheel went flying out from under me. I’m still not sure how I didn’t totally kill myself, cause I saw that shinny chrome bumper coming straight for my head. I think (but I’m not sure) I slid up to the rear of the truck, hit the rear bumper section, then kept going till I hit the trailer and stopped. That was one VERY expensive crash:
New Carbon Seatpost: $75 used from Anthony (How convenient!!!)
New Rear rim: $70 from BSS
New Rear Tire: (there was a huge bulge in the sidewall) $35 from BSS
Total thus far: $180 and that doesn’t include how much it’s gonna cost to get the rear wheel built up (probably about $30) and if I need any new spokes ($1 each). Oh yeah, one of hoods is torn up, which is $40 to replace, but which electrical tape should work just fine.
On the positive side… I really wasn’t hurt, it could have been much worse, and I never really like the red rims I had on the bike, so now at least I’ll have a black rear rim which is what I’ve wanted all along. Hey, ya think I might be so vain that I subconsciously wreaked my bike so I could change the color of my rims???? I just might be.

Glad to hear that you are OK! That's a pretty dangerous corner you ate it on. I've seen many a rider start a little slide right there. Nothing like what you went thru, tho.

So, are you still fixated on Carbon Fiber? That's what - two handlebars and seat post broken in the last 6 months? Get some metal stuff and slap some stickers over it! :)
Glad to hear you're ok.

Okay, so Oldschooler decides to shave his legs, and the next day, he crashes his bike into a truck. Coincidence?
Maybe. Or maybe the real story goes something like this: Unemcumbered by all that hair, Oldschooler zooms down the hill faster than he ever has. Going so fast, he can't help but admire his newly shaven legs, thinking, "Daddy be lookin' mighty fine" or "I'm king of the world" or "hey, I missed a spot." He looks up. He skids. It's too late. Whack.
Seriously, bummer about the busted up bike. But better the bike than your bones.
I guess this means you're going to have to ride your mountain bike for a few days. It's a hard life. :)

LMAO ... come to think of it ... he did mention not seeing the truck ;)
holy hell! what the hell happened out there this morning?

Spending more time on the mtb and letting leg hair grow back......................priceless.
Good points Lester and Griz. Oldschool must have been preoccupied with something. He's a MTB'r so we all know he's used to identifying object and going over or around them. This is what I think was occuring.
"Wow, this is a great morning. I'm right around 82 miles already this week and after this ride I'll be at 101. Of course 7 of those were on steel so I can't count them. Man it felt good riding that "monkey". Those mile riding steel should only account for 4 miles because I didn't feel the same amount fatigue I usually do on my aluminum FS. Maybe I should get a steel compact road bike. Oh shit, truck."
After crash:
"I wonder how hard it will be to mount disc brakes on that steel bike?";)
Seriously, Glad you made it out okay. O.S. do you feel any hesitation about getting back on skinnies again? Or do you compare this crash to any you've had years ago on a MTB?
