We got .25" of rain last night. Trails are probably muddy.
The trails were nearly dry yesterday. The new addition to California(cedar log bridges area) is staying muddy, but packing down nicely. The lower elevations were muddy/tacky. River Trail was nearly dry.

Cameron will be muddy--the lower trails and the river trail esp. Don't really think it will be rideable. It was still a little damp before the rain started yesterday.
I don't like getting muddy so with no more rain, I might try Sunday evening.

Rain stopped early Sat morning. Bright moon it was. Full day of sun should do the trails some good. Probably go hike them tomorrow to see how they are drying.

What is up with this weather?
We just got another half inch. Well, no riding till at least Monday evening maybe Tuesday.
It's still raining at 8AM.

Cameron was almost dry tonight(wed). Still some mud on the lower trails and some of the shaded climbs were slick. Very rideable.

Trails are sweet. Few muddy spots on the river trail and really low spots.
Climber kicked my butt. I think he could have done another lap. He also got to see me eat it on Batcave(doubleblack).
Beer was good.

Had a good ride Sunday morning then the rains came. I would imagine that it got a little sloppy.
Probably be excellent conditions for the next couple of days if it stops raining today before it dries to a bone.

More rain today. The TV station said nearly an inch today. Riding is going to be good for a few days.

Three tenths of an inch of rain Sat(8/9) afternoon. Trails should be rideable Sunday afternoon. Hopefully in excellent condition for my Monday evening ride.
BTW-If you think you know the trails, slap a light on your bike and try them in the dark just watch for all the spiders.

Trails are sweet. The 1.5" of rain did wonders. New trail to try. Hardly anybody on the trails after the incident--bummer.

08-23-2003, 12:28 PM
Trails are in great shape. Doesn't look like they got any of the rain that pummeled my hood yesterday.
Benefits of starting your ride at 7am on a Saturday morning--Baylor Women's Cross Country Team. Oh, it is also mighty cool, but the humidity must be close to 100%.
Non-benefits--Clearing the countless spider webs.
Benefits--Mist rising from the river as the sun comes up.
Non-benefit--Not being able to see the trail as you try to climb California.

Just to let you know, the Northern Little League Lighting Project is underway. This means that the hike/bike trails behind this area (Outback/Baseball Fields) and or immediately surrounding this area, will be under construction and closed off to the public from now until Oct. 9.
We will be getting with the construction people tomorrow and coordinating a trail safety plan to keep people off of the area. If you have any questions regarding this project, please feel free to call Teresa Carlisle, she is our park planner and would be more than happy to field your questions. Her number is 750-8091.
Please pass this info on to the club.
Thanks,

They have redesigned the race course. It is now longer 10-12 miles with 1200 ft+ of climbing per lap. Some new trails have been added(Cave of the Minotaur and Nellie's Trail?) along with incorporating some trails not used before--California and Arroyo. The start is now by Jacob's Ladder(Redwood Shelter).
I rode with Wumpus last night and the trails were good. There are far too many climbs in this park though. I want someone to level things out. Can I call a work day?;)

The trails are sweet. Tacky and not a mud puddle to be found. Best conditions I have seen since spring.

Trails are getting a little dry and loose. Rain is in the forecast for Thursday and Friday. Too bad, I probably won't be able to ride this weekend.
Wumpus
09-18-2003, 03:16 PM
The trails are nice. The rain really packed them down. Traction is wonderful. The leaves are starting to fall.
We got quite a bit of rain last week, and it looks like a few folks decided to ride them before they were ready.:(

Son of a biscuit. It poured yesterday evening. Flash Flood warnings and all. Probably be a good couple of days before Cameron SHOULD be ridden.
Club ride Sunday morning at 8am. Gotta love those early morning spider cleaning rides.
Wumpus

Ground is still tacky. Should be perfect riding on Sunday. River Trail may be a muddy in a few spots.

09-21-2003, 09:10 AM
Sunday morning the rain began at 8:30. I would imagine that Cameron is pretty much unrideable--It definitely would not be fun. Can we all say Slimerock?

09-25-2003, 05:28 PM
Trails are in excellent shape. Packed down and very little dust.:)
All except that one corner that I washed my front wheel out and did my best impression of superman.
Wish people wouldn't ride the new section of California when it is wet or learn how to corner without skidding. The trail is getting rutted.

Had a short but good ride last night in the drizzle.
Two inches of rain last night and this morning should make Cameron pretty nasty til Saturday.
For those of you that don't know: Cameron can be very dangerous when it is wet. The limestone rocks and bridges are slick as ice when damp.
Wumpus
10-11-2003, 01:03 PM
Rode Cameron Sat at noon. Cut my ride short. The trail is slick and dangerous.

10-19-2003, 10:46 AM
Nobody showed up for the Sunday Morning Ride at 8am. Don't know why it; it was a balmy 48F. Did an easy hour loop.
Trails are in great shape. The leaves are falling. The river was steaming. And the flowers are blooming.
Wumpus
10-27-2003, 12:19 PM
The trails are in pretty good. A little loose in spots--mostly climbs. The leaf cover is pretty thick in spots, but doesn't seem to be any problem.

Trails are dry and dusty, but in good shape.
Some Baylor folks were out picking up trash today.
Wumpus
11-06-2003, 12:31 PM
Trails are dry to slightly damp. Roots and rocks are dry. Traction is excellent. Leaf litter in quite a few spots but not a problem. Some of the bridges are damp which makes them slippery--use caution.

In the winter, it usually takes two days to dry to a rideable condition after a rain. If we get a couple a days of rain, it can be 4 or five days.
In the summer, it is usually rideable the second day after the rain.

Trails were great Sunday. Watch out for blown down branches. No rain yet today.
The outback trail had about five busted bottles in the middle of the trail. Going to take a small broom on the wednesday ride and clean it up.
Tanks for the report Wumpus - intending on coming up Friday, hopefully weather will be good.
Conditions today were almost perfect - just too danged foggy this morning, with a slight breeze making it just a shade cool.
Trail conditions were dry to dusty, even along the river trail, so no problems there.

I am planing on a road trip from Houston to ride Cameron the Friday (1/2). We had a lot of rain here, Sunday and wouldn't think about ride today. Anyway just sending out a feeler weather ;) to make the trip. I know it is early for Friday's weather but will check posting this week.
thanks

Trails were in excellent condition. We only got a little rain on Saturday night.
50% chance of rain on Thursday. Trails are not fun when wet.
Wumpus
01-01-2004, 07:47 PM
Trails were dry and still powdery in spots. We got a lite drizzle this morning, but by the time I went riding at 4 P.M. everything was dry.
40% chance of rain tonight.

Some idiots thought it would be cool to lay a bunch of logs across the "Outback".
If you don't like the trails the way they are, then go buy your own land.
Still no rain. Trails are pretty dry and taking a beating from people riding the race course.
Wumpus
01-14-2004, 07:21 PM
Trails were still dry, dusty and leaf covered last night.
They lowered the river(lake brazos) so there is a wonderful wet earth smell as you cruise the river trail.
When I started the ride, they were pulling a car from the river. I think they find at least one every year.
Wumpus
01-15-2004, 10:39 PM
Found at least three cars in the river this year. At least none of them had bodies in them.
Wumpus
01-22-2004, 03:14 PM
Trails are tacky to slightly muddy. The roots are dry. The rocks are dry to slightly slick. I would suggest a more robust tire to deal with the slight mud/dirt packing on the rear. Pythons might not be a good choice.
Rivers still down@10feet. Adds a little fun to the river trail as you get to see how much of a drop there is into the river.
Wumpus
01-24-2004, 03:45 PM
.2" of rain today.
The rangers have closed the trails.
I would imagine from what I saw that it will be Monday or Tuesday before they are rideable if the big storm on the radar doesn't get here.
More rain would make it Wednesday or Thursday before they open.
Wumpus
01-27-2004, 10:44 AM
Been dry, windy and sunny for the last couple of days the trails should be in prime shape. Will be doing a night ride this evening. Hopefully with Loco.

Trekky was supposed to come ride Cameron with me today, but we decided to cancel do to the weather forecast. Well, never trust a weatherman, as sunday dawned bright and clear. Recovering from my bout with the mystery virus, I was waffling about riding as omninous clouds built in and the temps creeped through the 50's. Finally decided to head out around noon and as I pulled into the Park the Sun popped out. Unloaded the bike and I was off.
Bunch of folks were out riding today.
Trails range from dry, hardpack to wet and covered in leaves. Quite a few trees down on the trails. Hope they get them cleared up before the race or there will be some cyclocross spots.

We received nearly 2" of rain yesterday and this morning. Trails may be rideable Saturday afternoon after the half marathon.
Wumpus
03-04-2004, 04:12 PM
Waco got a half inch of rain today to make a grand total of an inch in the last 48 hours.
If it sunny Fri and Sat they should be fine for Sunday. Saturday will probably still be slick. Friday will definitely be in the absolutely no fun catergory.
Wumpus
03-07-2004, 03:47 PM
Got to ride with Chuck, Dirtface and Krys-10(?) today.
A lot of riders out today. Saw the Trek team van and the subura-gary fisher auto.
Trails are in great shape - fast and tacky. There are a few slippery rocks on the climbs.
Wumpus
03-18-2004, 08:26 AM
Rained lightly Monday night and heavily Tuesday night. There is quite a bit of standing water on the river trail and rhino is pretty muddy. There is flowing water at the mix master. The upper trails are damp and tacky and in awesome shape. There is mud in a few spots where the water drains over the trail mostly in corners. The rocks are still slick, but a good tire will minimize slipping. Sitting while climbing kept slippage to a minimum.
Cave of the Minotaur is no more. The trail was blocked by brush this morning.
Wumpus
03-20-2004, 07:00 PM

Cameron is in great shape. The trails are dry(but not loose), and the rocks are dry. Flowers blooming everywhere. Lite drizzle while riding, but it didn't even get the trails wet.
There really wasn't a bad except, I spun out on an uphill and have a little trail rash on my knee.
There must be a million worms in the park. They are everywhere. Had to stop every half mile to brush worms and webs off. I'm sure I ran into a couple hundred.

We have some black one and some greens and some fat brown ones. They like to hang out at head height in large groups right smack in the middle of the trail. For a while I thought I could hear them landing on the ground, but I think it was rain.

The freaking worms are still here, and they are really starting to bug me.

Mucho thanks to whomever trimmed up outback and took care of the downed trees. Even left a log in the trail to ride over.

The rangers are building a new trail that start at the top of slider and does some tight switchback climbs and descents. The trail is planned to end at the beginning of the MCC Trail. It is still a work in progress so it is an out and back trail at the moment.

About a third of the way down Shyst is a large cedar tree blocking the trail. I didn't make it that far, though. I went down hard on the off camber slime. Thought I had seperated my shoulder for a minute or two.

Huge rockslide on River Trail. Rocks the size of cars blocking the trail. You have to climb over to get to MCC Loop and Rhino.
Large tree blocking Rhino…you have to climb over to get to Hale Bop or vice versa.

The park rangers have closed the trails to riding. :(
Here is part of an e-mail.....asked to be passed on.
Our park rangers have asked for me to send out this email concerning Cameron Park. It seems that the park is extremely wet and River Trail is flooded and unridable. Two of the bridges on the River Trail are completely submerged. To prevent more damage or injury, it needs time to drain and no traffic. They are letting water out of Lake Whitney and Lake Waco, so the river is flowing fast and has taken up temporary residency on the River Trail.
Don't know if this is only River Trail or entire park. My guess is that it's only River Trail.

Hey guys im on the Texas State cycling team and am coming to visit my girlfriend this weekend (12/3 - 12/5). Was planing on bringing the bikes, but i need to know where to ride. Is there any good mountain riding around the Waco area that would be easily accessible and not flooded? I have heard Cameron Park is great, but after that last post looks like that might not be going. Is there other trails besides River trail?? If someone could PM me some info or just post here soon that would be great. My name is Brandon Thanks!!!!!

The latest is that the trails near the river are flooded (water several feet over the bridges). This is due to water being released from Lake Waco...because of the heavy rains over the past few weeks.
The River Trail is a very easy beginner trail...but it is generally used to access the other trails in the park. In general the other trails NOT near the river are OK...but not great (loose leaf cover and very slick "green" covered limestone). You can access the "dry" trails...but the way to get there will depend on your skill level.
There should be some locals to ride with this weekend. I know there will be some trail building going on on Saturday morning...and in all likelyhood, some of those folks will be riding afterward.

You might want to check out the map(.pdf) (http://www.teamwbc.com/Maps/CameronPark.pdf).
There are suppose to be 16 miles of trail. You can't cover all of them without riding some trails twice. The river trail is about 2 miles of that.
Two warnings:
1) The trails are a maze. Best to try and hook and with someone for the first few rides or you might end up riding in circles.
2) Riding the park is essential doing hill repeats with some fun downhills in between. The trails aren't overly technical, but it is a demanding ride.

I like to park at the Redwood Shelter...but then again I always access the trails via the River Trail. You can get to several of the trails from the "RS", or least have a base area that's easy to find when your done. Plus...you can always ride the paved roads to other areas of the park.
Another advantage of the Redwoods Shelter is that it's somewhat safer than other parking areas. It's near the entrance and there are usually a lot of people around. I always see some "shady" characters at some of the other parking areas.
What time are you guys planning to ride on Saturday? I can check to see who may be out there. Just shoot me a PM.

If I can get out of here early enough tomorrow we might go for an evening ride just for the hell of it until dark. I will make sure I park at the Redwood Shelter. A decent way to start from the redwood shelter is to head up the hill via the road on the west side of the shelter. Once you are up on top, there is an entrance to the trees on the right just past the house. This is Root Canal. Its how the NORBA Race started last year. Provides a nice warm up and cool downhill before you get hit with California 56 at the bottom. Enjoy.

River Trail is basically not rideable past the Mouth of the Bosque...but in good condition up to that point. Bridge still has more than 2 feet of water over it and it’s just mud on the other side. Plus the huge boulders on the trail at Lovers Leap.
All of the trails that are accessible before Mouth of the Bosque and the interior trails are alright...but not great. For the most part the roots are fairly dry and not that bad. LOTS of DGR’s (everything is covered in green...even the hard packed soil and some roots). Add to that the leaf cover...and it’s a challenge in some spots...but still rideable.

It shouldn’t be that bad. The River Trail and MCC Loop were open this past weekend. There was still some mud on the bridges...but the park people were working on clearing the stuff from the trail (high priority since this is the most traveled area). They actually cut a little “technical” (for the River Trail) section into the rock slide.
The only things that were still bad....of course Rhino and the Mix Master. And the DGRs. I lost some of the trails under the leaf cover...which can be a bit interesting.
Less than an inch of rain yesterday and this week looks dry if we can make it through tomorrow with no rain. Only about a 20% of rain tomorrow night.

Don't know about Slider...but Hale Bop is still good. From what I understand...the new trail runs from MCC to Cameron Park and the MCC Loop...intersecting at Hale Bop, if that makes sense. I'll try and find out the official "reroute". I think they are closing most of Rhino because of the falling trees and mud.

From what I understand (this is second hand info mind you), Ho Chi Minh and some of the other “double black diamond” areas are not ridden enough…and due to erosion and lack of upkeep, are becoming very hazardous. Don’t know when, or for sure, if it will really happen.
Rhino is definitely going to be closed.
When will they be implementing these changes on a permanent basis?
The timeline on the new trail is iffy right now. Originally…it was to be part of the race in March…so it was a high priority. But, from what I understand, plans fell through on the use of some of the facilities at MCC…so it may no longer need to be completed before race time.
By the way…this new trail is supposed to be something special. 12 foot log bridge over a deep “crevasse”…parts of the trail with drop offs on the sides of the trail so steep that if you fell…you could actually seriously injure yourself. It’s been described as something that will be unique in Texas…almost North Shore like.

Ok, that would suck. They are double black because they are on the more techincal side. They aren't any more dangerous than they have ever been. I would be happy to volunteer to maintain them.
Don't really care about ho chi minh, though. It doesn't connect up with the other trails very well.
Some of the easier trails(shyst and rio peprido[?]) have way worse problems with erosion than the blacks.

Shit! I'll drive down from DFW to help you Chris.
Ho Chi Minh, while one of my favorites, is not near as dangerous as Thor, Skidmark, or Slider even. From what I remember, Rio Perdido has some of the worst errosion issues of any trail in the park, but that doesn't make the closure list.
Closing Rhino for a serious injury trail might not be the wisest thing. Hale Bop, while tough is very ridable for most folks. At least going down. When you get to the bottom it provides an easier way to connect folks to the River Trail. If you eliminate that you essentially keep "lesser" riders from enjoying that end of the park. That's a bad move imo.

Like I said...I don't know for sure about the double diamonds, didn't hear that from the Cameron Park people...but from some of the folks in the club who work on the trails.
I don't think the new trail will be all that technical or really dangerous...but more of "rush"...something different.

I'm going to wait and see. I just don't see a feasible option if they take out rhino. Highlander is suppose to run from the top of slider to the beginning of MCC trail unless they have changed their minds and decided to bring it back to the bottom of hale bop along the hillside by rhino.
One, would be to make some crazy switchback climb thing where slider is.
The second, would involve cutting trail somewhere from the bottom of Thor.

OK...I just talked to someone who has been working on the new trail "Highlander". Highlander does start at the top of Slider, and will end up around the end of the MCC trail near the marina.
The closing of Rhino is not official...but has just been talked about. Thinking about it...it just doesn't make sense...because you would loose that bottom part of Hale Bop...which is a really nice trail.
Sorry about any misinformation. What I originally understood was that Highlander was to be a bypass...so that Rhino whould not have to be used when it gets bad...and it (Rhino) would eventually be phased out because of all the problems down there.
Again...the Ho Chi Minh thing is just talk.
Next time, I'll try and get the facts straight...but you know...it's the nature of the business that I'm in to just go with what you got ;)

Trails are in pretty good shape considering all the rain. Lots of leaves on the trails. Roots are dry; some DGRs. Ride with caution.
MCC-River Trail loop -- Muddy; do not ride.
Log Jump on Rhino -- Mud puddle in the landing zone; Creek is flowing.
Bat Cave -- Definetly rideable.
Thor -- Leaf covered and probably slick. Some big rocks in the drop. Not the time to try it for the first time.
River trail -- puddles here and there.
Mix Master -- Creek is flowing and wide. Runoff from Buzzard/Erect area.

Trails are almost to summer dry conditions. Looked like some areas of the trail have actually been groomed.
The reports of worms are greatly exaggerated. I only encountered a few on my ride.
Mix master is still a little mucky, but can be ridden around for the most part.
Watch out on Batcave as 'trail construction' (http://www.bikemojo.com/speak/showthread.php?t=40734) is going on.
There is a large rock at the bottom of Shyst where it connects to the river trail so be careful.

They took out the little wooden bench at the bottom of Shyst.
And...as I was driving home...worms were crawling all over the place. It's really hard to see were they stick and stay.
Wumpus...are you saying that the worms will get worse?

Yeah and today there was a huge rock in the trail.

See all the white dots.

They were like that everywhere last year. I wasn't exaggerating that I would have to stop at the top and bottom of every climb to wipe off twenty or thirty worms. I almost quit riding for a while they were so bad. It was the worst year I have ever seen. If you stopped, it would sound like it was raining.

The trails were excellent today. The little bit of rain over the weekend really helped some of the loose stuff. The limestone (dgr’s) is not bad at all.

The rain missed us last night.
Trails should be great for the weekend.
Baylor is holding a race in the park on Sunday morning. They said they will be marking the course on Saturday.

There were a few worms today. Nothing bad.
Trails are pretty dry. The creeks/seeps are dried up.

What a ride.
We started off in the sun. Then the thunder started rumbling. Then big ole raindrops. Finished up just before the deluge. Had near whiteout conditions on the drive home. Then the sun was back as I pulled into the driveway.
Trials were pretty dry and the rain wasn't getting through much. Imagine they will be good to go tomorrow evening.

No kidding. That thing is huge. I'm sure the park rangers know and it will be "chainsawed" soon.
The Thor-Babbler-Bat Cave area is covered thick in poison ivy.
Note: Drag Boat races this weekend on the Brazos. Don't know how this will effect traffic in Cameron Park.

At this point, I am not entirely certain that I can. What I can do, is hope that I can make it up for an evening ride late next week.

Spectators poaching the boat races slowed progress on the base trail today. The park is ready for about 10" of rain to pack it down but everything is rideable.

Got a decent ride in.
Most of the trails don't even look like it rained.
Seems like a lot of rocks shifted on Batcave.
Ho chi minh was fun as always. Nothing like sliding down a hill on a layer of bamboo leaves. Mucky mud at the bottom still.
Watch for fallen trees. Removed one from the middle of Act of Faith.

hi there - been off the bike and the computer for a while. The trails at CP are nice and tacky with help from the little bit of rain that we had the other day- (0.62") at the house. Watch out for trees and other debris on the trail, other than that, the dirt is nice and the downhills are getting a bit choppy

The trails are in perfect condition wether you have one gear or nine. The rocks and roots are dry but the singletrack is tacky enough to let your tires do the work in the corners.

Well, I met two of these today. Both around the mixmaster. One was right by the sign post and the other right before the bridge at the bottom of lean-to -- you can tell him by the tread marks on his tail.
