Taking the plunge ... time for a road bike...

Well as it stands I should be picking up my Trek 2300 this afternoon. I have been calling around and trying different bikes but so far the Trek has suited me the best. I am going to check out the C-Dale R2000 just to be sure I don't want one, although I am not a fan of the C-dale proprietary parts. Anyways, unless someone has some compelling reasons or a comparable bike for the same money... (around $1800) I should be road riding soon, but I don't plan on being a roadie. (no offense, I just mean I wil still be wearing MTB clothes, shoes, helmet, and a camelbak, also the hair on my legs will remain intact.) :D

Check out Bianchi. They make some nice bikes in that price range in both aluminum and steel. I think Charles @ Hammerhead has a couple in stock, though I don't know what size. He also has a slightly used Titus Drop U in stock in that price range that might fit you if you're around 6'. He also carries Marin, which would be something to look at if you're interested in steel bikes.

I don't think the C-Dales have too many proprietary parts on their road bikes until you get into their really high end stuff. They build a very nice road bike. Also, check out the Giant TCR - lots of folks rave about them. My wife has one and loves it.

I'd also suggest checking out used road bikes. You can get a lot of bang for the buck by buying something that's a year or so old. Check the classifieds at www.txbra.org and see if there's anything in your size. I know I was able to pick up a full dura-ace equiped bianchi that was practically brand new for a -lot- less than the price you listed.

I left a message for Charles about the Titus. I think that's an '02 bike, which is cool with me. I haven't seen the Bianchi's yet, but I am going to take a quick look at the C-dale on my way home, and maybe stop @ Nelo's and University since I pass all those shops on my way up North. I am looking for a 58cm frame.

it was a nice bike, but there's more bang for the buck with the Marin and Bianchi, and we could also build up a salsa to spec

I have spent a LOT of time crunching #s and comparing specs on the bikes we carry....

I'll second that, it's a really nice bike - just toodled around the parking lot vic on it when I was out there Friday but was sweet.

Anyone riding Shim triggers on their MTB will be able to "get" the Campy Ergopower stuff more quickly, I think. It has separate levers for the direction of movement for the derailleurs.

On Day In The Distant Future (?) when I get the money (hah, just spent all of THAT) and interest I'd like to move my road bike to the Campy stuff. I wonder if I can get a Campy setup that would work on a Shimano 8spd rear hub ... have to start researching ...

Seriously, I'll need to talk w/you about this, I'm sure I'm going to want to switch over my roadie to the Campy stuff but now that I've drained all my credit at home I'll have to budget this a while out I am sure. Talk to ya later ...

PS: Had a social ride today out at Warda ( some friends of mine live out there and were, in a rare situation, actually home on Sunday ) ... the Quasi should be illegal to ride on trails like that.

check out the REI Trionfo -- Ultegra group, FSA Carbon crankset, carbon fork and rear end, shimano paired spoke wheels, nice seat/bar/stem, all for <1800. Take that exact bike and slap some Trek or C-Dale decals on it and it would be another $800+
