know why aluminum chainring bolts are hollow? to save work when using an extractor... after the bolt head shears off there's no need to drill it before threading in the extractor!!! killed one when removing my granny... that was a 3 dollar bolt, dammit!
figured alu would be ok for the granny chainring given the low torque applied when pedaling that range of gears... plus the LBS was out of steel chainring bolts (how is that possible?)
(answer to rhetorical question: steel bolts $3 per five, alu bolts $3 ea)
I used the two small grunts method of measuring tourque when installing the bolts - should have used my tourque wrench
