View Full Version : Brake Pads
Thoughts anyone? I'm looking to replace them for a fresh start this year and wanted to see what you are running and get any advice on them!
Thanks!

the main thing is, to get the pads that match the type of surface on the rim's brake track.
ceramic or plain.
i've had good luck with WTB Razor Blades, Ritchey Pro Logic pads, and the new beefed up XTR aftermarket pads (much, much better).
i ended up sticking with the Ritcheys casue they feel really stiff and not too spongy.
the XTRs are the same.
the WTBS are a bit softer and seem to work much better when it's wet.

Noticed that one brand (Ritchey's I think?) has a version for all conditions, one for wet and then one that is a combo. Is this marketing hype or is there some benefit here?

the Ritchey pads come in black for all around conditions but they work best when dry.
the red is the wet condition.
the blue is the mud pad.
the catch is, the harder the pad material the faster it'll waer down the brake track on a bare metal rim. the red and blue are better suited to ceramic rims.
funky story. one of the guys at the shop, had a set of Mavic cermaic rims and the blue Rithcey pads. he was off to some race where rain was teh order of the day....no doubt about it.
he comes back to work a few days later with the bike and the mud was soooo bacd that not only did it wear his new pads within half of a milimeter of the metal cartridge but it also removed all the ceramic material on the rim and began to goove the rim. yikes!
another lap and he would have blown out the side wall of the rim with the metal cartridge or lost all brake power on some wacky downhill section.
nothing works best in mud but somethings work better. even riding in sludge at 700 with 1.5 Contis i had problems. fewer problems than with a set of 1.8s but still problems. i think riding in mud has more to do with the rider.
