I'm pretty sure this won't be an issue. A friend broke his Alivio (?) 8-speed rear derailleur last night. He's looking at getting an XT but at a quick glance it looks like 9s are the only thing available now. Is there any reason a 9 wouldn't work?

Oops, just had him double check. It's an STX 7-speed...
I've been told that the newer derailleurs will work with older cogs/shifter pairs - the shifter set's the derailleur throw - but not sure if it goes back to 7 spd.
I also have an old XT 7-spd rear-d that I'd sell really cheap, if you can't find your friend another solution.
Of course, then, you might actually get that wheel magnet too ...

Excellent. Thanks!
I'm making this guy buy beer and come over to put his bike on the stand. I've ridden with him three times now and everytime he's had a ride-killing (for him anyway) mechanical.

Sure, it's just a question of quantity :D
Actually I just look at it as an excuse to drink some beer and get more experience wrenching. Possibly even an excuse to buy a new tool or two.

Hmm, a beer-driven economy. Interesting... If I homebrew, would I get busted for counterfeiting?
