Pace,

What is the current arrangement with the Club Truing stand? Will we be able to check it out, or will it be at someone's place like last year? I just bought a new rim so I can rebuild a road wheel I trashed this summer. I haven't begun the transfer yet, but I will need to use the stand pretty soon.

Actually, I have never seen it. I will call Matt B. or Brandon and find out where it is. James at pedal power said it was cool if we came in and used his tools.

I was afraid of that!

It's either back at the Rec. Center, or it needs to be "recovered" from their old location. I don't remember her name, but the Sport club woman will know if she has it or not.

I'll try to recover it. ;)

I'll try to keep the burden off of James if possible

Here's the word:

The Truing Stand is at the Rec center. Only Joe and Andy can check it out from Tranice (sp?)

Hopefully we can arrange something for next week. :D

Dang Hector - you are always looking for that truing stand.

we have three truing stands, one of which is in the back room at our new state of the art wheel fabrication station ;) it's no trouble at all if you team guys want to use one, you can even have privacy for those intimate wheel building situations

It's for building wheels, ANDY, not whacking it!

I suck! The rim I bought to replace my tacoed one doesn't work with my old spokes & hub. My old rim was deep dish and the cheap replacement I got online is not! I was beginning the transfer when I realized my fatal error.

Should I just try and find a cheap deep dish, or just get a new wheel? Anybody have a rim to trade?

Get some new spokes to lace to your old hub and new rim. Most spokes are less than $1 each. Let me know what rim and hub you are using and I can calculate spoke length for you for any lacing pattern you want.

Hub,
I appreciate the offer, but no thanks. You see, unfortunately for my road bike, it's not a mountain bike. ? ? I don't like spending money on the road bike. As P.C. as I'd like to be, I must admit, I am prejudiced against my own road bike. Rather than spend the time or money to relace the wheel with new spokes, I'll look for another cheap ass rim and simply transfer the whole wheel, as-is.

:p

OK, but the wheel won't last 1/8 as long so you're just sinking more money in the long run. Put down the $15 and build a wheel that will last. It's not worth the time to rebuild a wheel with old spokes in my opinion, that's just a waste of a perfectly good rim.

Really? I would think this be the case with a MTB whel, but with a road? The only abuse my road wheels get is from torque and crashes (in which case replacement may inevitable either way).

I see what you're thinking, and it is true that a good road whee will last longer, but you gotta figure the rims aren't overbuilt and the spokes are longer. The longer spokes carry a greater load and there are always pot holes and rocks that you hit at higher speeds. A well built road wheel will last upwards of four years with fairly heavy use, but a wheel buit with old spokes will require attention quicker and likely be in trouble by around 6 months. I'd acctually bet that new spokes are more important on a road wheel since many of the popular rims are acctually guided by the spokes more so than mtb rims and thus depend on them for more integrity. A road wheel is more of a suspension system than a mtb wheel is (deep dish rims are an obvious exception).

Hector,
Dude, I know a guy who owns a bike shop and I can get you a sweeeet hook up.... okay so the guy is me. Anyways, if you still need a wheel I can give you some spokes and labor is free for you racer types so I can give them to you laced in a pretty pattern, and properly tensioned to boot!:)

James,

I really appreciate the offer, but I cannot take your time :) I'm sure the spokes are no big deal to you, but I don't feel right taking your time away from business. I'd prefer to use your tools, as you graciously offered, but feel more comfortable lacing the wheel myself. - Although I'm sure I could use some tips and a bit of direction.

Since there are other teammates that have more trouble with maintence, I rather THEM use some of your free time.

Thanks again James!

Smokey? You must have me confused with someone else -unless your talking about how I smoke people's asses! :D

I may come by the shop tomorrow. Schools starting, so I 'll be in your hood all the time!

James,

Thanks again for your help and the hook-up today! You da man!

I'll be in tomorrow morning to finish out the wheel.
