Does anyone know if we can buy Windows XP for a reduced rate at SWT? Believe it or not this will have a cycling purpose, hehe. Thanks, J o e y :-)

Team Dudes and Dudets,
Does anyone know if we can get special deals on Speedplay pedals from the local bike shop? I have my eyes on some mega float X/2 Speedplays because my Looks are giving me some knee pains. Grazie,

J o e y :-)

I don't think we got a deal, but they are the shit. I've been using them for 7 years or so and have no desire to use anything else (unless walking through dirt/mud is invovled) after having used shimano, look, and time extensively. I've never come out of a pedal unintentionally, and my chodromillacia almost completely dissapeared. The only thing to worry about is that it is acctual free float. Just about every other pedal on the market has a resisted float (spring tension on cleat which means it takes acctual muscle force to cause tibial rotation), that is only an issue for young riders and riders with specific knee injuries since it requires greater supporting muscles (which in my opinion is better in the long run for most riders). They also (contrary to popular opinion) have better power trasfer since almost no energy is lost in trying to rotate the cleat and the supporting muscle developed are also syergistic to delivering power to the pedal. Since they're double sided and entry is so easy there is a definte advantage at the start of a race as well. I've only had dtrouble getting in a few times and they were all due to a lack of lube in the cleat (my own fault), unfortunately one of those times lost me the straight line sprints at bike messenger worlds (I ended up second in my heat after making up six bike lengths on the winner). If you're going from looks you'll LOVE the cornering clearance as well, lots of people actually scrape their shoe befor the pedal. That and a good pair of tires will improve you order out of the last corner in a bunch sprint by 3-8 spots (depending on what you do with it and who you're racing against). In one crit (matrix challenge) I had been led out for a break (I know, who the hell does that, I shouldn't have followed) and gotten caught with a half lap to go. I was totally blown but there were six nasty corners leading up to a short sprint so thanks to a good pair of vittoria opne corsas and my speed plays (and knowing how to use them) I led them into the corners and put the hurt on them while I recovered a little. One of them snuck past me, but I held off four or five of them despite the fact that you could hear my breathing from 150 meters away BEFORE the sprint even started.

look for an internet deal, that will beat a discount through a shop anyway (and I don't think any shops in San Marcos carry them anyway).

There's absolutely nothing special about time or look, they are base line designs and there are several companies who have improved on them.

Gracias for the post on Speedplays. I am going to look for an internet deal on Speedplay Zeros (stainless). In the meantime, I am still going to try to get us a pro deal on speedplays, even though it will be too late for me, but it wouldnt be available until january or so. If it is like Park Tools, which gives mega pro deal discounts when i got them for UT, the drawback is the long processing time for orders. Thanks again man,

Roadies & MTB'ers,
Is anyone interested in attending collegiate Track Conference this fall? To race on the track you must be track certified. Last year at UT we got a free day clinic at the Houston Alkek Velodrome by Charlotte (olympian). This gets one used to the feel of the track sport and also gives everyone certification to race. It is a lot of fun and I am sure we can set something up for the team if enough are interested. Otherwise I will ask my bud Julie from UT, the Track VP to see if we can ally with them for their clinic. Peace,

J o e y :-)

I'm interested in trying the track out. I don't have a fixed gear bike, though. I think I can probably set one up for a couple hundred bucks with a cheap ass frame - yellow bike project or something. Any ideas? Joey, Do you have a dedicated track bike? Can I rent one down there?

Oops, that's a good question. Thanks for reminding me. We can rent track bikes for $5 at the Velodrome in Houston, so bikes are no problem. You can either bring your clipless pedals or use strap pedals too if you own them. If you ride a 50 or 52 sized bike we can share since I use those for track.

About when... I might be able to get the Aggies to let us combine with them for their clinic which I believe is in September sometime. I will get back with that part. Bis dann,

New Teammates,
If you are coming to the meeting to be scheduled sometime next week or so, please brainstorm some ideas for us to get $ponsorship money. The "pro deal" sponsorship requests are being prepared and sent out as we speak, but we will need some $$$ sponsors as well to supplement the budget given to us by our school. Some ideas for locals maybe: Grande Communications, HEB, Doctors, Law Offices, Gyms, Motels, etc. Thanks ya'll,

J o e y :-)

p.s. With all luck, we will be able to have a team H1 Hummer painted up for the team, hehe!

No need, I am in good with President Bush, so he'll let us borrow Marine One to take us to the races. Air Force One is only for Nationals unfortunately. I went to high school with his daughters you know.

SWT MTB'ers,
Collegiate MTB is coming up. Who goes? Well here is a short e-mail reply from the conference director. Basically, if we rock at the only MTB race before Nationals this fall, we can go. We are 2nd right now in the state, so I say hoo haa! Wanna beat the others, then rally around the flag for the upcoming MTB race Sept. 20th put on by the Aggies!

J o e y :-)

* * * * * * * * * * *

"It's the top two teams and the top three individuals not on a team based on the
overall conference results at least two weeks from the nationals._ Since we only
have one Mountain bike race scheduled so far, it will be based on those results."

Kathy Volski
SCCCC Director.

Chris,
We can rent track bikes there for $5 a day. I do that when I have gone, and I just bring my toe strap pedals. I don't like clipless pedals on the track. I have an extra pair of strap pedals I could loan you for track. I will contact my Aggie bud to see if we can squeeze 2-3 of us interested into their clinic date since we don't have enough yet for a full SWT clinic. Peace,

Sweet. Ya, I have some toe clips I could dig out also. Do you have any idea when their date at the track is? Im down for whenever, even if you want to head over there with a smaller group sometime. I guess there are some technicalities about being certified that may prevent that though. Sounds good, see ya

Does anyone recall or know of any construction companies that have built for SWT or might be with new projects. If they think they can get in better with the university by showing contribution to their organizations and students, I bet they might help us out as a sponsor. If you know any local names let me know. There is huge $$$ in construction and we might be able to tap into it.

joey-

the new Physics/Technology building that was just built on west campus was contracted by SpawGlass. (sp??) I work in the Science Building right next door so ive seen it go from a dirt mound to an ugly-ass building. I dont know if that is what you're looking for, but i thought id give it a shot.

Which states are in the Southern Collegiate Cycling Conference? (Though travel expense and difficulty makes it difficult for the reality to exist at many races here)

(Answer: Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana)
* I am no guru, just was surfing the SCCC website and realized how rare it has been to see any races outside of Texas. Usually it is Louisiana if not Texas. Too bad the universities didn't support us financially where we could have a heck of a lot more races and variety!

Roadies, Trackies, & MTB'ers,
I received a reply from Krispy Kreme about sponsorship. We can submit a formal proposal, but only if we meet a requirement, which we might already. I have no idea what 501(c)3 status means. Does anyone know what this means as an organization? Does it mean non-profit? I have received 2-3 others that state this requirement as well. Grazie for the help,

J o e y :-)

I'm sure it has to with us being able to give them a certain form, so they can claim their donation/sponsorship on their taxes. It probably has to do with us being a registered non-profit organization -I think.

Andy, This is probably a question for Tranice.

It has a lot to do with interest. Our University didn't have an NCAA soccer team until there was enough interest generated in the club team.

I feel ya Joey. I'm not always so eager to drive down to San Marcos unles I feel it's worth the trouble. It's diferend when school's in, cause I'm there anyway. But, who wants to drive for 1 hr to find a fruitles meeting? Maybe we should have an "Austin chapter" meeting :D .

Anyways, I'm still not sure if I'll go. I may end up trading off the evening road ride for a long MTB ride during the day. ... decisions, decisions.

Peace in your hood

No Meeting 4 Me

Since there is a lot of normal before fall-semester stuff going on: moving, registration, out of town, work... I am going to stay in Austin tonight. I think once school starts and everything is in gear things will be back to normal.

The sponsorship requests can partly be mailed out now, but some cannot be submitted until late September. As for jerseys, I am going to play with some graphic designs and ideas on my Mac.

See everyone in a week or so once school is in gear. Friede sei mit dir,

About the 501 status thing....

Andy, the club is not allowed to its own tax-exempt status.

If companies would like to sponsor the club and receive tax benefits all
they need to do is send the sponsorship check to the SWT development
foundation and specifically state that it is for the cycling team and
they will receive the tax benefits.

If you or your sponsors have questions, they can contact me directly at
512-245-2392 or via e-mail at mc38@swt.edu.

Also, we need any race schedule information immediately. Also, don't
forget that Nelly is coming in concert and tickets are still available.

Thanks,

As far as the track thing goes, your own bike is always better (the rentals are often in terrifying condition, but are totally worth it if that's your only way to ride). Used is a great way to go with picking up a bike since they have to be so overbuilt anyway, there are plenty of 70's frames still out there winning national championships. I'll be happy to go along and help out with the pointers I picked up in my years of track racing. If you have even the slightest interest in trying it you should GO. Track racing FUCKING ROCKS!!! I've never taken anyone out there that didn't get absolutely hooked, including one former UT rider that I coached for a while and now holds three national track titles that will openly tell you she never would have even thought about track racing if I hadn't dragged her out there. There's just nothing you can do on a bike that compares with a good pack race on the track.
