Last year there was a good group of SA riders who headed to Austin. Some rode in the Ride for the Roses (http://www.laf.org/Events/Ride_Weekend/), some of us did some of the Austin trails....

So I imagine that there will be some of us heading up again....

I'll be there again this year for my fourth time.

If you've ever wanted to see what 6000+ cyclists looked like all together, Sunday's ride is an impressive sight.

The downtown 6th street crit on Saturday draws some pretty tough national competition as well as a few celebrities (Robin Williams was there last year).

The weekend-long health expo is pretty cool too. Also, they have a hoity-toity silent auction and gala on Friday night for those of you that like to get dressed up and spend lavish amounts of $$$.

This year, there are a couple of new events too so check out www.laf.org (http://www.laf.org) for more info.

-George

P.S. From their e-mail listserve:

The 2002 Ride for the Roses Weekend registration is now available online. The Weekend provides a fun and rewarding opportunity for cancer survivors, cyclists, runners, music fans, and volunteers to come together and show their support for all those who have been affected by cancer. If you are interested in participating in the Weekend or finding out more information, please visit www.laf.org (http://www.laf.org).

Your participation allows the the Lance Armstrong Foundation to accomplish it's mission of helping people manage and survive cancer.

Thank you for your support!

I am in! Lost my grandma a few weeks ago to Pancreatic Cancer and want to wear an "in memory of" tag for her.

As a newbie, ya gotta tell me the details. I am probably gonna go up saturday PM and stay with my father in law.

Let's get a plan going here.....

Let's get a plan going here.....

Be sure to leave at least 1-2 hours earlier than you think you'll need to get to the staging area. You won't believe how many people turn out for this thing and Austin roads cannot possibly handle them. Plus, Lance and biking as a sport gain exponential popularity every year, so it gets even more crowded every year. BIG line for nasty port-a-pots, so do your big business before you go.

If you intend on getting a Ride-for-roses jersey, you gotta get to the check-in area EARLY. Last year they sold out except for XS and XL sizes in 1st 2 hours. But, they cost $80, so not sure if it's worth it anyway. They reprinted more later, but at a cost of over $100 a jersey. You do get a cool T-shirt as part of the deal anyway.

Be sure to hang around for post party. Last year they had free Fat Tire on tap! Plus plenty of sammiches and live music from Vallejo and others. There's incentive to make good time on the road!

I saw Robin Williams up close several times, but never saw Lance. Robin even stood next to me while we watched the crit races (no one recognized him until my friend tried to discreetly snap a photo of him, then he got swarmed and had to scoot).

Be sure to at least watch the men's crit on Sat. evening. Those dudes haul butt!
:)

I rode this with Keith (Sugar) and Brian last year. Hopefully Brian will be all healed up by then.

What distances y'all interested in? they've got more selection than ever this year. 10, 25, 40, 70 and 100 miles (not Kilometers). I did the 100K last year, but my computer said it was 68 miles. The course map for the 70 mile this year appears to be the same as the 100K last year. That's probably what I'll do. I remember thinking last year after the ride that there really was no point in going any further than that. That's still the longest distance I've ridden in one day. My butt was pretty sore! But, I'd only been cycling for a few months at that point.

I'll also be glad to show you guys around some of out mtb trails here in town as well - so bring your mountain bikes with you.

Yeah, I am new to road biking but 40 miles doesnt seem to be worth the trip, and 70 miles seems like a little to much, but I will probably do 70. I have 50 in the hills north of San Antonio in about 3.5 hours, so 70 shouldnt be a problem, except for the sore butt.

Scott Mc.

I am doing the MS150 two weeks later so was thinking of the 100, but not alone. So if all do the 70 I will ride along.

CRAP!

I just learned that there will be no more criterium races for Ride for the Roses! They said too much cost and the liability was too great. I think that stinks! That was one of the highlights of the whole weekend for me.

Instead they do the Rock for the Roses on Fri. nite, which is definitely a good thing.... and that Banquet on Saturday evening which is prohibitively expensive and sounds boring to me.

I'll just have to look elsewhere in Austin for entertainment on Saturday between Rok the Roses on Friday and the funride on Sunday.

:(

Hey, good idea! I'll bring my trail bike and go for a ride in Austin!

That'll give me something to do while my wife goes "shopping". Then we can hit 6th St and the Warehouse district that PM.

I better book my hotel soon though.

Yea. Saw him there too, just wandering around. People including me didn't recognize him at first. He was right next to me browsing through stuff. Just a short furry and funny little man. I tried to kinda act normal and just said "howdy" or something. I moved over to Britton's display and then he did too. Jim Britton got really excited when he started talking to him about riding and stuff. He had him sign a few things and took a pic. Robin was real interested in that red Ferrari Pinarello (or Colnago?) and I heard later he ordered one - for like $10,000?

Then like I said earlier he walked up next to us unrecognized at first while we were standing watching the crits. Finally my friend said "I'm sorry, I just gotta get a photo of this" and tried to discreetly snap a photo of him. But others saw and then pandemonium started and he had to scoot.

At the ride, he finished not even 5 minutes before we did, so we almost got to ride near him too.

Never saw Lance though. Go figure.

OK the time is almost upon us, so who's in?

I'm planning on doing the 70 mile loop, which will probably be the same as last years. I'm not going to take as much time at the stops as I did last year, but I do plan on getting through it at a decent pace. Can't have the ride cutting into my Fat Tire drinkin', Subway sammich eatin' and live band listenin'!

I hope I see some of you at the start, but trying to get together will likely be unrealistic just due to pure #s of people there and lack of landmarks. Even if you do, one we all get rolling it is VERY difficult to stay together. Still, we can definitely hook up afterwards. You know where you can find me. Between the Fat Tire kegs and Subway sammiches!

Man, it's a tough call...

No Mo Moe at Flat Rock or Ride for the Roses....

Hey Sandy, you still in for doing the short route for RftR and then hoofing it out to Comfort? I would be able to swing that.

If not, I am gonna have to side with Moe since well, Ride for the Roses will be around next year and Moe won't.

Assuming I do make it up to Austin, I plan on being there Saturday mid-afternoon through Sunday morning. Any plans for a Saturday afternoon MTB ride around 4PM?

What about any other mojo tomfoolery that night?

I got a chance to see Robin Williams do a live performance last night at Bass Concert Hall here in Austin. He's a freaking nut. I've never seen anyone manage to go no-stop on stage for 1.5 hours like he did. Excellent show - go see him if you ever get the chance...

The BP MS 150 begins on Saturday, April 20 at 7:00 a.m. at Tully Stadium in West Houston (I-10 at Dairy Ashford) and follows FM 529 into Bellville for lunch. After 98 miles, Day One ends at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in La Grange, Texas for an overnight celebration complete with dinner and live entertainment. Marvel at the site of over 100 tents in Team Village and the colorful array of pup tents covering the fields.

Feast on homemade pancakes on Sunday morning before saddling up for Day Two through the scenic, rolling terrain of Bastrop and Buescher State Parks. Take a break for lunch at Bastrop High School before heading for the Capitol city for finish line festivities.

www.ms150.org

i think it ends up being about 180 miles.

Not having the crits really took the wind out of the sails of this whole event and changed the feel of it. It's no longer really that much about biking. It's a fund-raiser similar to the Susan Kommen run just completed Saturday. You don't go to either one expecting to get in that good a ride or run. It's just for charity.

That being said, the Rock the Roses outdoor concert on Friday PM, was SPECTACULAR due partly to Cake, which were very good, but primarily STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. I saw these guys in '94 and they rocked, but seemed kinda aloof and maybe even annoyed they even had to play in San Antonio. TOTALLY different show this time. They were obviously all in really good spirits, tons of interaction with the crowd, and Scott Weiland was not only clean of drugs, he apparantly has been doing a lot of Yoga or something. The dude seemingly could climb up on anything with perfect balance, moved in almost contortionist fashion, spun and twisted his body around and generally put on the best show I can remember ever seeing. STP ROCKS! I am going to try to find out the next time they are playing in TX and try to go.

Unfortunately, I missed The Crystal Method, but everyone said they had equipment trouble or something and it didn't sound that good. Oh well, I've seen them before and they do have a TON of equipment, and they also ROCK.

The ride: Lance, Davis Phinney, Eric Heiden, Robin Williams were all there. This time I caught the lead pack at about the 5th mile, so I was about 50 ft away from Lance, Phinney and Heiden, though I couldnt see them. The mob following just behind them was a rather perilous place to be, due to the stupid and discourteous things people were doing. Cones became a big hazard. 3 people near me nailed them full on at 26mph in the middle of the pack when people failed to call them and they got put a little more to the inside than the last. All kinds of stupid stuff going on up there, so I let them go at the 1st rest stop while I stuffed my pockets full of loot (PowerBars and Shots). It wound up being about 75 miles, which was about 5 miles farther than my body wanted to go, but it was fun. I'd do it again.
