ChocoLoco Says------------------------
Signs can't be expected to replace common sense. When the parking lot is full expect more riders. Turn the walkman off, look ahead, listen for other riders.

While a couple of people have made comments here about knowing the IMBA rules of the trail, there's lots of weekend riders at WC that don't. That's the signage that should be put up in the parking lot...yesterday!!! (IMBA sells them on their website fairly cheap) Lots of first-timers, families w/the truckload of Huffy's etc. are finding WC and have no clue about this stuff. Educate them before they leave the parking lot...help them to not get lost w/a suggested route...let the rest of us enjoy the place as we have for years.
-----------------
1st I would like 2 congratulate Jkarnes on the map. & all of u 4 caring n your own way.

Getting the family unit 2 read a sign would be the best way 2 educate the newbies & beginners. Make the sign attractive 2 kids & intriguing 2 adults. Post all messages, suggested loop info & suggested directions of the trails n English & Spanish. Put pictures or drawings of things 2 do n the park on the sign 2 attract the kids. Place the sign near trash cans so adults & kids will c it when they throw away their trash (in a perfect world).

There will always b 1% (of every group...mtb's included) that will do what they want 2 do and no one will change them.

The vandals will continue 2 vandal until we show them that we have more will power. We will continue to place signs, ride & maintain trails until they get discouraged & go somewhere else (hopefully).

Through responsible riding technics, we can set the example 4 others. The reason parks has the 10mph on trails is probably because 2 many cyclists have blown by hikers & runners without warning or slowing down. Next, they will make us walk all the downhills if people don't stop skidding their rear tire causing the trail 2 become a washboard.

Cyclists r the majority user on the trails, we are the majority when it comes 2 trail building & maintenance, and we r the majority that other trail users complain about to parks.

We have 2 police ourselves, or we won't b allowed on the trails n the future. With this forum & all of us communicating, even if at times we agree 2 not agree, is the best thing that we have at this time.

Parks evidently has some other agenda that is more important than ours, so we have 2 do this ourselves. It's not a club thang, a u thang or a me thang.....it's a us thang.....brotha's & sista's!!!!

For over two years I've been hearing that a kioske for WC is in the works. Well, how much longer is it going to take?

You are right, a kioske was needed LONG ago!

Do you really think posting rules is going to make any difference?

Do posted speed limit signs in the park make people obey them?

Do the 'No Alcoholic Beverages' signs at WC stop us from drinking there?

Do the 10:00 pm park closing signs make people leave at 10:00 pm?

People are going to do what they want to do. Kisoks may be a good way to provide some PR for ARR and mountain bikers as a whole, but I don't think it'll do anything to reduce trail abuse or ignorance.

I voilate that stuff all the time, too.

My point is that signs listing rules without the ability to enforce them amounts to nothing more than noise. I don't think there's the ability or desire to fully enforce all the 'rules' associated with riding bikes at WC. I mean, do you -really- not want to be able to have a post-ride beer? Do you -really- want to have to drag your brakes on every downslope to prevent exceeding 10 MPH?

Print some maps up and hand them out. Show a newbie the trail if they look lost. Be nice to hikers, dog walkers, male prostitutes, etc. Let them enjoy the park in their way, and hopefully, they'll let you do the same. Be cognizant that no matter how much we might wish otherwise, the world is full of stupid, selfish and inconsiderate people that share the same park space that we do. Some of them even ride bikes - and they don't read signs.

when I ride WC on the weekends (which ain't too often anymore) I ALWAYS see families out there. That's the target of the kiosk. If you teach a 9 or 10 yr old (and their parents) the rules of the trail i.e. shared use/control your bike/wear a helmet, then you MAY not end up with another punk ass teenager seeing how many people they can piss off in the woods. Granted you may not be able to pierce the thick skulls of some of the dipshit masters of speed out there today, but how are you gonna prevent another generation of them from perpetuating the problem....EDUCATE 'EM.

Was on the Greenbelt yesterday and saw at least 2 ppl using the kiosk at the trail heads.

Don't know if anyone bothered with the text, but the map got their attention.

The kiosks / maps at Cameron Park are awesome!

We used them yesterday to pick our trails and make some sense to the madness. Very helpful for highlighting water stops, too.

They had all the MTB trails drawn, as well as named, w/ difficulty levels.

Mt Tam in Cali had rangers along the trails with radar guns. Over 15 mph=$200 ticket. Rumor that they would hold/confiscate your bike till paid.

Maps good; some people will follow the rules if posted. The more that do follow rules; the more stupid the ones that don't look.

It's a sad day when I have to use my bike light batteries to power my rader detector.
