Okay, it looks like I'll be in SA for sure next weekend. I'm going to visit my family in Marion (any of you NB/Schertz/Converse guys doing a road ride Saturday), and then I'll be visiting some other family on the Southwest side later on that night and Sunday. Are there any rides/riders in those parts of town up for a little Sunday action?

How about any rides that start farther out of the city limits? I heard of one on Hondo (can't remember if it starts in Hondo or goes through Hondo), and some of those other little towns. Any info is appreciated!

Heya Ruben,

I'm on the southside, as is Gary Duncan. He has a sweet little ride through the southeast part of town, out towards Elmendorf and back that is more toward your liking and pace.

My southside ride is more utilitarian in that it is strictly boring miles and borders on being called a "personal training ride" (ok, for me, it is... for you, it may be too slow, hehehe). The other one I do is out 181 to Floresville and back (roughly 60 miles round trip).

The only catch is that both Gary and I are pretty wrapped up in the STORM race preparations so I don't know how much free time either of us will have on the remaining weekends leading up to the race (April 6-7). Hopefully he'll see this and chime in form himself.

Regarding Hondo and parts out west, there is a ride that starts out in Castroville (as well as one other that escapes me) that you might want to look into.

Of course, once the race is behind us, I will be more than happy to commit to some time to ride with ya.

No problem George. I'm game for riding anywhere and anything (man, that sounded like a pick up line at a rodeo). Ummmmm, Okay. The one to Floresville seems cool. I haven't been out there in years. Do you have a contact for the Castroville ride? Any names of places or anything?

From the Wheelmen site:

Devine Ride (SW) (F to R). Rides are 12, 21 and 40 miles. Meet at the Park-n-Ride off Hwy 90 in Castroville by Sammy's Restaurant. Mild rolling terrain with some hills. Ride leader is Norm Kelly: (830) 985-3816.
This ride was scheduled for March 3, but perhaps if you contact Norm, you might be able to set something up.

for tomorrow, there is:

Saturday March 23. 8:30am. Southside Mission Ride. (S) (F to R). Meet in the parking lot for the Mission San Jose Visitor Center on Napier Street (just off South Roosevelt) for rides of 27, 39, and 51 miles past historic missions, fields, and the San Antonio River into southeast Bexar County. Stay after the ride and tour the visitor's center and Mission San Jose, the "Queen of the Missions". Ride Starter is Ken Erfurth (210) 533-3416.

and for the weekend you will be here:

Easter Hill Country Tour. Friday 29 - Sunday 31 March. Three days of great riding in the very best country that Texas can offer. Headquartered at the Schreiner College in Kerrville. Rides are sag-supported each day; distances (miles): Friday: 33, 57, 70; Saturday: 19, 35, 55, 66, 107; Sunday: 19, 32. Organized this year by the Lubbock Bicycle Club at www.lubbockbicycleclub.org. Registration is $30 for 3 days before March 19th ; $35 thereafter. Saturday-only registration is also possible. Camping available at Schreiner State Park (not at the College) and optional meals are also offered. Registration form is on their website; can also register on location.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, good bunch. But they have their "apples" too :(

I was a new wheelman last year, and I was the new kid in town for the LAF Roses ride...I was sportin my Jersey (Carol Voges ROCKS!:D ), and when I see a group wearing my "colors", I go and introduce myself to them, explaining I was new, etc...Now I am a friendly, outgoing guy, but in the way of MoJo, I could hear in my head: "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Captain has turned on the 'Elitist Bastard' sign..." Dang...While I was speaking to one of them, the friggin punk turned his back to me...In a crowd of hundreds of riders around us, I said very audibly on how "my s--t DOES stink".

Most are good folks...Done some fun rides with them out on Camp Bullis, etc, but BIG turn-off at the LAF ride last year by a few "EB's" (Keep in mind...I pummeled every last one of them over the 100K course:D )

Yeah Weeg, that seems to be how the road sect is. I'm a roadie the majority of the time, and try to keep it friendly. I really don't have a problem with being friendly cause it's in my nature. It seems to be a true roadie, you've got to be a prick. I think the only way to get through to some of them is to drop them. I've had my share of drops and doing the drops. And yes, there are all ways bad apples in any crowd. You've got to see an "elitest's" face when he gets dropped by a hairy legged guy out to have fun!:D

P.S. By dropping them on that ride Weeg, you truly are a "roadie".
