There are some that hop the barriers. Here's a photo from the Moritz race in Dallas last week. Check out the other photos too. Beautiful weather, fall foliage, scenery..... photo album (http://homepage.mac.com/bofrench/PhotoAlbum74.html)

Are there rules against pushing the barriers over? It looks like the guy pushed them over as he went over one of them....?

I wasn't there, so I don't know if he nicked the barrier, but it appears he cleared both no problem. The top one seems a tad bent, but could've gotten that way from others hitting it with a foot or something. But, it's still in line with the flags. Remember your point of view is tilted though. Those barriers are on a steep hill section so the ground is tilted in relation to the barriers which are pointed straight at the sky (zenith). That's a common scenario in cross races (the few I've seen) where they put a barrier at the bottom and top of a short but steep climb. This one happened to be on firm enough dirt I guess that he could get enough traction to ride it out after he'd bunnied it.

I was under the impression that it was frowned on. And that is why the barriers are often put in groups, and close together such that it would be almost impossible to clear one with out crashing into the next one....

But....

If the dude has that much energy, to hop a barrier on an uphill, I say more power to him.
