I was thinking I might could throw one of these on the outside of my Race Face 5-bolt Turbine Crank set and rings, but after reading a little more about them, I think maybe you have to replace your big chainring? That won't work for me, but I'm willing to give up my Granny Gear. I've now ridden FlatRok, FlatCreek and Tyler without touching it. I don't need it until maybe Lajitas next year.

here it is: http://www.bikepartsusa.com/product_info.phtml?p=01-98183&r=7

4 reasons I'd like to have a bash ring:

1. I ride lots of rocky stuff and I'm not that good a bunny-hopping so I usually roll them or wheelie as much as I can over it.

2. I've only been bitten once, but seems like when I dab or fall a bash ring would be a nice safety feature to keep those teeth out of my leg. Remember that photo posted by Toninator? Ouch!

3. It might help keep me from throwing the chain off to the outside of biggest ring? THis is really a tuning problem, but always a possibility when on bumpy, fast descents.

4. They look cool!

Cons: Weight is 140 grams. I'm fine with that.
May have to remove big chain-ring. I'm NOT fine with that!

Race Face made, or makes, one that doesn't require you to remove your big chainring. also, look for the Tooth Fairy and Rock Ring that most shops can get from a distributor.

as for the granny, i too notices that it wasn't much use.....2 X 8 or 9 is the way to fly. you'll climb fast (cause you have no choice) and not hang around on the side of a hill (that sucks) so long.
also, check the big ring and make sure it's not bent.

I love bash rings. I did away with my big chainring though. I'd do it all over again also. I am a very large Clydesdale though and freak when you light weenies talk about the need for a large chainring and no granny. Hell, I use the granny about 1/3 of my riding. Gotta haul my fat ass up somehow.

Just the thought of riding without a granny gear has me all hungry. I think I'll go make something to eat. Someone has to keep the granny gear makers in business...

DavidK were you at Guts and Glory by any chance?

The best thing about chainrings besides the KING KONG bash through shit factor, is no more chainring bites. I have 4 major bite scars on the back of my legs from before my bash guard. Nothing since. And no more bent chainrings from logs and such. Plus a bash guard that is smooth on the outer edge facilitates sliding over large logs and rocks.

Finally, taking off my large chainring and increasing the size of my granny and middle chainring left me with good power but a higher clearance level. I like that.

Cool! I'm gonna go shopping!

T_: Yea, I was riding at FlatRok on Saturday with Keith Jupe around noonish, but we were riding just for fun. Both of us have Gary Fisher Sugar 1's with Race Face cranks. His is blue, mines navy blue / yellow. Thanks for the post on bash rings. I'm gonna try to find some that will work for me. :)

BlackSpire makes a product called the XC God that protects all three rings. I can vouch for their stuff as I use a Ring God on two bikes and really dig em. Web Cyclery stocks thier stuff and that's where I purchased my rings.
