What's your favorite Austin MTB ride? I have a feeling I know the answer to this one, but let's see it in the form of electrons.

BTW, you can pick TWO if you just can't decide.

Hey - you left off the really cool trails like McKinney Falls, St. Ed's and the Town Lake Hike & Bike!

If I could only ride one trail in Austin, I'd be hard pressed to choose between CP and the Greenbelt. I'm glad I don't have to choose.

I'll take Forest Ridge the way it used to be please! We used to ride for hours and never ride the same trail twice. I came across a map the other day, I'd forgotten about some of the trails out there. Blue Carpet, LSD, Beavis and Butthead, I never did clean that nasty downhill called Bloody Mary. You newcomers don't know what you're missing.

Yeah, I know. When more challenging trail gets built at St. Ed's, I'll add it to the list.

TLHABT? I'll take my chances on the road!

I've never taken my bike to McKinney Falls. I usually go to hike a bit, picnic, and relax. I heard the cycling is pretty relaxing there. Maybe I should give it ashot.

I spent a week in Austin on business once and only rode TLHABT. The hardbodies were worth the three 40+ mile rides I did. I just couldn't stop riding cause I knew there'd be another hardbody just down the trail. Crowded but the view provided a wonderful incentive to keep riding.

Scha-fucking-wing....

I guess it's been so long since I've even been on the TLHABT that I forgot about the scenery....

Maybe I need to reconsider... :D

Hrmmm. Is there such thing as the Green-Nut Park? I like em all. Time to throw darts at my computer screen. BRB...

Hey - you also left off Emma Long! ;)

Last I heard about St. Ed's was that Britt, Hill Abel and Max Moore were meeting to disucss adding trail there. I don't know if the meeting occured, and if if did, what the outcome was. I've decided to leave it to folks with more clout who can hopefully get some movement going there. I'm ready to build some trails, though...

I live right off the Shoal Creek greenbelt so shoal creek, a quick loop around the lake and back home is a sweet 1.5 piece of fun for me.

What's up with McKinney falls? I was there a few years ago and there seemed to be one ~5 mile loop and nothing else. Did I miss something?

Anyone ever been to Bandera for the Hill Country State Park? Supposed to be 30+ miles of trails, but it sure is a long way from Austin.....

dburatti

We had a bad experience at Bandera with a rangerette at the gate. They make sure bikers feel very unwelcome there.

The trails are open for cycling, hiking, and horseback riding. Some technical stuff, lotsa loose stuff due to the horses, just a maze of trails. Carry a map with you.

You can connect McKinney Falls and the Onion Creek GB for a longer ride. I don't know what the milage is, but it is fun, kinda fast and not a lotta users.

Ain't it great that we've gotta choice!

I too, had a hard time deciding....but I chose the BCGB. We did a 25+ mile Bike Patrol ride their this past Sat. It was like the old days. Most everyone must have been out of town because there were not many users of any kind out there. We started at Zilker and went up the HOL from there it was all side trails and into Travis Country and back to some side trails into the GB.

We were looking at places that might accomodate freerides and observed trials. The places are there, but permission and access will have to be obtained first.

This is a Question/Response.

So far out of the Trails I have ridden locally(New to Austin)
I like Walnut Creek and The GreenBelt Equally..The Greenbelt being more technical, and WC being a faster ride.(Not as many two legged creatures.)

My questions would be were is
Paradise City: Forest Ridge, including Ken\'s Trail?
And is there or were there a trail system at or near
Steiner Ranch?

I would also like to thank the ARR for the Beginner Ride at
WC last Wensday and for your childrens events.

I Forest Ridge is closed and fenced but it was along 360 a little South of Spicewood Springs Rd. I think (prolly wrong) Ken's Trail is the other side of 360. I only had a chance to ride Forest Ridge maybe two or three times before that fence went up. Oh well.

Forest Ridge is no more. St Ed's still exists - it offers a good climb and a little bit of scenic singletrack - way too short, but it's there. Check the 'trails' page at www.austinridgeriders.com for directions.

There are/were some trails in Steiner ranch. They are/were actually surprisingly good and technical. I've heard that a large portion was built over, though. Also, they are not open to the public - you have to live in Steiner or ride with someone who does to ride them.

Thanks,

Since I am new to the area, I am trying to get out and ride every different place. So far I've been to Walnut, Muleshoe, Greenbelt, City Park. There all good rides in there own respective way. I'm closest to Muleshoe so I'm partial to it. I plan on getting to all the places on the Ridge Riders Site, but any other places that any one knows of is greatly appreciated.:D

If you're up for a little drive, you should definitely check out Cameron Park in Waco. It's a looooooonnnng, booooooorrrrriiiiiiinggggg drive, but the trails are worth it.

And of course, Rocky Hill Ranch in Smithville. That's about a 45 minute drive a little past Bastrop.

Snds great...The Family is going out of town for several weeks so my intentions are to hammer it like crazy...Hopefully I'll get to check both of those out.

I seem to split my time, lately between CP and the GB. For an all out, no loafing effort, a couple of loops at CP is the ticket. For a more lengthy ride with options and degrees of difficulty, the GB a great choice.

My typical, long weekend ride starts from home, and in fifteen to twenty minutes I'm on singletrack. My loop can be anywhere from two hours to four plus depending on available time and energy.

I was going today, but It's to slimey out. Crap!!!!

Man it's a 45 minute drive to Waco. How slow do you drive?

It's more fun if your speeding and dodging the law.:D

Easy, CP of course.

BCGB(+) is close second, and where I go in town for more mileage.

Gawd I wish Forest Ridge was still open, that was a most awesome place to go NR at. I would love to be able to do my work-week by starting with a lap @ CP and finishing with 7-12 @ FR, but that I guess shall have to stay a dream for now.

Definitely CP first followed by the GB off-shoot trails, but the main GB can be a real pisser for hiker and biker alike when crowded. St. Ed's for the climbing, but it does get boring...

Muleshoe - A good, fast trail with a couple of minor tech areas. I think if you're training for a race, this is the place to do it.

TLHABT - I ride this one at night for 3 laps (Dam to Dam). It's a good 30 mile aerobic sprint when it's empty....plus you get to scare the shite outta people who think you're a train...

RHR for the BURGERS! Priorities, man. Priorities! :)

Gee I almost lost sight of the subject of this thread.
I have to say bCGB with offshoots over cP just mainly cuz of the mileage factor. But riding that thong sure would be smooth.

Don't even think off speeding in Williamson Co. It's were we shove all the red necks to in the area. Unless you drive a pickup truck with echo tips and glass packs, then you can do about 100 and they will still leave you alone. I think the Klan still governs that place. Be very very carefull grasshopper

question about city park- ive seen hikers with pets out there before but noticed this weekend (havent been in forever) that the sign said no pedestrians and no pets (but on the website its different).

what exactly are the rules there and when do motocycles actually ride out there?

Hikers are not allowed.

Motos and bikes are allowed during park hours.

interesting. seems like it would be much safer for hikers out there (unidirectional) than at WC (billion directional)

Would tend to agree. Guess they are worried about the speed the moto's can attain out there.

understandable.... id rather be jumping out of the way on foot than clipped in though :D

i ask because i was hiking with the gf and the dog (she doesnt bike much, especially CP tech level) and we only saw 4 bikers all day... and obviously got out of the way and didnt die... :D

A better hike with GF and dog is Turkey creek Imho. I know its nice to show the significant other "see, this is the crap that I ride, and this is why I always come home bloodied and bruised", but Turkey creek dogs are allowed to run free and its right down the road.

thanks. ill have to check that out.

i havent ridden WC or CP in a long while and i was suprised at how different a lot of the terrain was (especially the side trails that have formed....)

i dont remember CP being as "torn up" as it was...

CP was pretty eroded the last time that I rode it this summer. Seems like the weather and motorcycles are taking their toll. That being said, the last time I did trail work out there was at least 2004, so I can't bitch too much.

Bear
12-02-2006, 09:19 AM
CP is a case of "the more it changes the more it stays the same" - stuff moves around but it's never been the place to "learn the line" so much as "learning how to handle the obstacles" - IMHO

But as dry as things have been, there's a lot of dust 'n scrabblies about.

Turkey Creek is a very sweet hike. Would also be a great hike with kids, with the caveat that I haven't been out there for several years; don't know the current poison ivy status, if any. Lots of water to splash in, very shady.
