I use to ride these trails about 7 years ago and they were a blast. I just started riding again about 3 months ago and I was wondering what condition they are in?
I have heard reports that they are pretty torn up. Are they rideable? Are both the east and west loops still there?
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric

Conditions are improving rapidly.
Several months of heavy rainfall and people riding in the mud really tore up the trails. It was pretty much unridable since the spring. If Tex Mex had posted that he was thinking of coming up to ride, I would have discouraged it.
But the situation is different now. Over the last couple of months, we have done a lot of work out there. Also, BTU finally mowed the levee. Sat and Sun, I rode there for the first time since about April. It was actually pretty good, the best shape the trails have been in since Jan, before the monsoons started...
There are still a few spots that need work, but overall it's pretty decent... and in a few more weeks, it should be in fine shape.
Yes, there are still 2 loops. If you last rode them 7 years ago, they are a lot different now.
Currently, the East is the only one that is ridable. We have been focusing on fixing up that one because it was so badly damaged and it is the race loop for the TMBRA race in Oct. I think it is the more fun of the 2, anyway.
Some of the BVMBA folks were also working on fixing up the west loop and had gotten quite a bit done. Then we had to rechannel all the effort to the East. I think that once the major work is complete on the East, the West will be pretty easy to finish up.
But yeah, the East is becoming a pretty decent ride again. Some of it is pretty rooty and is hell on a rigid bike like I ride, but the rest is a mix of fast trail, tight and twisty trail, and some semi-technical sections... about 9 miles worth... the West will add another 6 or 7.
Hey bikerchic... am I not a good person to talk to anymore?
(I'm kidding you. Actually, I was taking some downtime from mojo lately... haven't been on the boards much).
I still don't know if the trails are currently worth coming all the way from Htown or Atown to ride - maybe, maybe not - but they are getting close to the point where I could recommend it...
Oh... and there will be an official trailwork day in early Sept.

What's up with that? I have wondered about and mentioned you lately. I thought about you when we were in Comfort this weekend. Hope all is well.

It sounds like they are getting better. I might take a cruise out there on Sunday if the weather is nice.
Thanks,

What's up with that? I have wondered about and mentioned you lately. I thought about you when we were in Comfort this weekend. Hope all is well.
It all started when I cancelled my home internet service - got tired of paying for it at home when I get it for free at work... internet service, that is. Not much time to post at work, though. Also, haven't been doing any road trips lately... trying to save it for some trips this fall.
You and Wumpus and anyone else who's interested ought to come down here sometime. We talked about that a while back, before the trails went to hell... Mel & The Gang from Houston came up last summer and seemed to have a pretty good time.
bikerchic, I'll post the trailwork date as soon as i know it. It's probably the 1st Sat, but maybe the 2nd... I can never keep it straight. Yes, it is the BVMBA that puts on the trailwork days. It's also a Paydirt opportunity, if you race.
Person, the 1st 2 or 3 miles of trail have some pretty sandy corners, so watch out. I crashed the other day in the sand... just couldn't steer.

Hopefully not the first weekend(Sept 4th and 5th). Was thinking about going to the Kerrville race to play on the downhill if my new bike is here.

Yep, I went the other way. Even getting disc brakes.

Dang, Wumpus, one more gone to the dark side. Congrats. I hope it arrives in time.
Talked to Jan Elliot, the BVMBA pres, and she said she thinks the trailwork day is the 11th, but will need to double check that...
And yeah, if this thing happens, we could go to the Chicken afterwards for some refreshments...
More info as I find out...

Looks like it will be the 11th.
There is a country music fest at LB on the 4-5th.... I can't imagine we'd have a trailwork day out there with that going on.
