View Full Version : Freehubs dying

I've been through 2 shimano freehubs in the last two months. The first one lasted 18 months. The last one only a month. I'm not riding in the rain, though I do have a couple of creek crossings on some of my regular trails.
The freehubs have continued to function, but they've become very noisy - pinging and popping and sounding very rough when freewheeling. I've tried removing the freehub body, pulling the little seal, and dripping oil in the bearings - but that only seems to make it worse.
Did I just get a bad freehub body last time, or is there something else that could be causing me to mess these things up?
Thanks,
Kyle

are you a masher? many times the pawls and bearings can be damaged easily by mashers. if not you might have picked a bad freehub. this happens from time to time.
what kind of grease is being used on the bearings of the axle and what kind of oil on the freehub bearings?
finally, how do you wash you bike? car wash?

I'm not a masher - I consider the big ring to be nothing more than a sacraficial offering to the rock gods and think that granny is heaven on earth. Of course, I do have super human - almost Superman like leg strength, so that could be the prob... :)
For grease, I use Phil Wood's water proof on the bearings and I've used tri-flow as oil on the freehub.
I wash with a garden hose - no high pressure at all.
Bad freehub?

I think Carlos was asking what you used to wash your BIKE.....

you're right Strieber. i prefer garden hoses myself. the car wash high pressure hurts my sensetive parts (also known as the "dirty place").
TechniKal, sounds like you might have picked out a bad freehub. if you grab the cassette with your hand, does it wiggle on the hub? having superhuman leg strength usually isn't a problem unless you put it to use on the big ring......or for evil purposes.
