I'm new to Austin (from Boston) and was wondering what the cyclocross scene is like here in Austin/CenTex. Any group rides, good places to ride, good web sites for race listings.... See what I'm saying? Any intel would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Chris,

you're in luck. there's going to be a bunch of cross races this year. Starting in October (http://www.txbra.org/events/events.asp?task=calendar&Month=10&Year=2005). There will be a bunch of them here in San Antonio and a few in Austin I'm sure.

Hey Chris - as noted I moved down here from S'ville last summer. I assume you did Marblehead and all that. I'm a mtb'r (I raced with Rage and I'm still on MTMMind) and multisport guy (Mercury) but I met some of the cross guys that trained over in Arlington heights and at McLean in Belmont, and I went to Tufts with Mark.... whatshisface.... who I think did pro cross in Belgium for a while, so I dont know if we ever met or not.
I'm not sure if the 'cross scene down here counts, since instead of frostbite and mud you get perfectly glorious weather on race days; I did one race in December last year, and I think it was in the 60s. Not to say the locals wont be shivering...
WTF is a "dilly"? :endo:

Thanks for all the intel so far. Now.... as to "what's the dilly". This is a contraction of the phrase "What's the deal, yo?" Derived, I believe, from the colloquial hip-hop parlance of NYC in the late 90's. It could have been more accurately phrased, "What da dilly?" Sorry for going Cliff Clavin on y'all.
Hey Stackout:
I actually lived up in Newburyport so I don't know any of the cats you mentioned. I did a couple of the Gloucester races and one or two in R.I. a few years back but was definitely a hacker. But, I'm looking to get back into it so anymore intel is appreciated.

you walking through downtown Austin today sucking on a big gulp or was it your doppleganger?
So what do you all think about using a 2002 Jamis Ventura (reynolds 630 steel frame, some crappy carbon fork, all tiagra drive train) for 'cross? Can the frame hack it? I'd need new wheels, I figure, what else, brakes?

Busted, I was mocking you. Sorry. And to Hello Kitty, I have been training for cyclocross. Mostly by eating chocolate ice cream to simulate the mud I'll be sucking in a few months. Come on though, more intel on the local scene required.
